Police make arrest after ‘Newcastle fan’ urinated on statue of Sunderland icon

Northumbria Police has made an arrest after a man in a Newcastle shirt was filmed urinating on a statue of Sunderland legend Bob Stokoe outside the Stadium of Light.

Footage was shared on social media on Monday as the man in a Newcastle away shirt is urged 'show them what you're made of'. The man then walks away with the cameraman as the pair chant: "We hate Sunderland."

Northumbria Police said in a statement: "We are aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show a man urinating on a memorial outside the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.

"This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and a full investigation has been launched into the incident. A 21-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and remains in police custody at this time.

“We recognise that incidents of this nature can cause anger and frustration within our communities. We would ask everyone to please respect the ongoing investigation and refrain from anything that could jeopardise these live enquiries.”

As a player, Stokoe spent almost his entire career with Newcastle United, with the defender making 261 appearances for the Magpies. However, he became a legend at Roker Park in the dugout for Sunderland when he led the Black Cats to the FA Cup in 1973, and secured promotion from the Second Division in the 1975-76 season.

The statue was created in 2006 to celebrate 'the man', 'the messiah', and 'the moment'. And the plaque on the statue reads: 'I didn't bring the magic. It's always been here… I just came back to find it.'
