Piers Morgan has intensified his online feud with Andy Murray after Lionel Messi missed a penalty in Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup win over Poland. The two men are on opposite sides of football’s GOAT debate with the broadcaster favouring Cristiano Ronaldo while the Scotsman is a big fan of the Argentinian.

The World Cup has reopened the debate surrounding who is the best player in football history with Ronaldo and Messi going for the trophy for the first time. The duo are both well within their twilight years so this year’s event in Qatar is likely to be their final chance to win the tournament before they retire.

Morgan is well known to be in Ronaldo’s camp, something he made clear to the player during their extensive interview released two weeks ago. Murray is of the opposite persuasion, and exemplified this in an earlier spat with the 57-year-old at the World Cup.

The Talk TV presenter has now looked to intensify this feud, tagging the tennis star in a tweet and writing “oops”, coupled with a photo of a disappointed Messi following the Argentina captain’s penalty miss.

The tweet was the exact same as what Murray had directed at Morgan after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Mexico in the preceding game. Messi had effectively won the match for his team scoring the opener with an excellent driven shot from outside the box before laying on an assist for Enzo Fernandez’s clincher.

Murray believed his performance was enough to prove his point about the superstar and tagged Morgan in a post carrying the “oops” message alongside a picture of Messi celebrating his goal. In response, the broadcaster tweeted: “I can see why you like him… both the 2nd best players in your sport to come from your own country. #Maradona #Perry.”

That had followed a post from Morgan earlier that week where he had tried to intensify the GOAT debate after Ronaldo’s penalty against Ghana. The 37-year-old completed his iconic ‘Siu’ celebration right in front of a picture of Messi, with the Talk TV presenter jumping at the opportunity to make a cheeky point about it.

He tweeted: “Even Messi knows,” next to a picture of the celebration with the clear implication that it had proved his point.

With Portugal and Argentina both into the knockouts, the GOAT debate is only likely to intensify going into the final weeks of the competition. Both players will be desperate to get their hands on the trophy in what would be the crowning moment in their glittering careers.
