Paul Pogba is 'a class above most players', says Lee Sharpe

Paul Pogba is ‘a class above most players in the Premier League’, says ex-midfielder Lee Sharpe as he urges Man United to offer the ‘wonderful’ Frenchman a new contract with his deal expiring next summer

  • The former United star called him ‘a class above most Premier League players’
  • He believes the club should do everything in their power to agree fresh terms

Manchester United star Paul Pogba is a ‘class above most players in the Premier League and thoroughly deserves a new contract at the club, according to former player Lee Sharpe.

The Frenchman’s deal at Old Trafford expires next summer, and has been linked with an exit from the club following an up-and-down five year spell since returning from Juventus for £89million in 2016.

But this season Pogba has shown signs he is becoming the player United forked out a club-record fee for, with some inspired recent displays in the middle of the park for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former midfielder urged the club to tie the ‘wonderful’ Frenchman to a new contract

His return to form has sparked suggestions he could commit his future to his boyhood club after putting his injury woes behind him, and Sharpe – who played 193 times for the Red Devils between 1988 and 1996 – believes United should do everything in their power to agree new terms.

‘If Paul Pogba’s heart is at Manchester United I’d be trying my best to get him a new contract before the end of the summer,’ he told the Mirror.

‘I think if he doesn’t want to sign and his head has been turned to go elsewhere then I would sell him right at the start of the summer so I’ve got all summer to find a replacement and go and get another world beater, but for me I’d try and keep him at the club.’

The former midfielder admitted he was a huge fan of the World Cup winner and feels he is in another league to his Premier League rivals.

Pogba finally looks like the star United paid £89m for in 2016 but his deal expires next summer

‘I’m a bit of a Paul Pogba fan if I’m in honest,’ he added. ‘I love him, love watching him. I think he’s a class above most players in the Premier League when he’s on his game.

‘If we can get him fit and keep him fit and give him a run in the team I think he’ll win games for you. I know defensively he’s a little bit lacking at times but I think sometimes the greatest players that go forward and create for you are not great defensively.

‘So I think you need to put players around them to protect against that. But going forward he’s the type of player who gets in situations, takes defence into attack, goes past people, we’ve seen he can score goals and create goals, a wonderful player.’

Pogba has made four assists in his last five games for United in a season where he has featured 35 times – having overcome a series of fitness issues.

The Frenchman appears content at Old Trafford and insists he will hold talks over his future

Overall he has played 192 times during his second spell at Old Trafford, winning the EFL Cup and the Europa League in his first season back in 2017.

He has been heavily criticised by pundits and fans over claims of underpeforming, and agent Mino Raiola has added fuel to the fire by repeatedly suggesting his future lies away from the club.

With his deal exiring in 2022, a return to Juventus has been mooted, while Real Madrid are known admirers – but Pogba suggested in January he was happy with how things were going with United.

‘I’m on contract, I’m here, I’m enjoying myself,’ he told BT Sport. ‘Everybody knows that I have one year left, I’m going to speak with the club, see what’s going on.

‘Is this the best Pogba for Man Utd? I hope not! I hope I can do even better.’
