Newcastle United are poised to submit a formal transfer offer over the next few days for Argentine youngster Maximo Perrone, according to reports. Manager Eddie Howe and technical director Dan Ashworth could be gearing up for a productive January transfer window as the Magpies attempt to maintain their superb start to the season.

Since their lucrative takeover late last year, Newcastle have operated effectively and efficiently in the transfer market. A wave of recruits in January, followed by further reinforcements in the summer have contributed to their stellar start in 2022/23, with Howe’s side sitting third in the Premier League table.

The club’s vast riches and the idea of a project have already allowed them to recruit top players such as Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes. Solid performances and the potential to qualify for Europe next season will only make their task of attracting major talent in the transfer market easier.

Velez Sarsfield teenager Perrone could be next in the crosshairs and club journalist Agustin Sileo claims that a formal offer will be presented to the Argentine club in the coming days.

Perrone, 19, has become a regular fixture for Velez this season with two goals in 15 league appearances. Described as an elegant holding midfielder with the potential to reach the top, the youngster started Velez’s last club game, against Central Cordoba, at the end of October.

On the whole, Velez have struggled in the league this campaign with just six wins from 27 matches. It remains to be seen how much money Newcastle are willing to put on the table and whether they plan to welcome him straight into the first-team fold.

Valued at just over £7million, Perrone recently jumped up at international level to become part of the Argentina U20 squad. If the midfielder is tempted by a move to St James’ Park in January, he would be welcomed by a solid Latin American contingent including Miguel Almiron, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes.

Barging his way into Howe’s midfield plans may prove tricky with Guimaraes, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff all excelling this season, while Jonjo Shelvey is waiting in the wings. The Magpies’ 4-1 win over Southampton on Sunday was their fourth in a row and Willock claims that the result emphasised how much progress they’ve made over the past 12 months.

“It was a good win, it shows how far we’ve come you know the way we dug deep to come away with the win today,” he said. “I’m happy obviously to score and help the team. It was a brilliant ball [from Kieran Trippier] and a good finish.

“I’m itching to score at St James’ Park now, I feel like it’s coming and hopefully next week my whole performance and not only the goals, the level of performance. I’m happy I could score and hopefully it can continue.”
