Gary Neville has hit back at Jamie Carragher within a fierce Twitter exchange following the revelation that Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly requested to leave Manchester United.

The Portuguese superstar has informed the club he wishes to be allowed to depart Old Trafford this summer should a suitable offer arrive, according to the Times. The 37-year-old's decision is thought to be based on his desire to play Champions League football next season – something Erik ten Hag's side cannot offer.

While the Red Devils have been rocked by the revelation, one man who isn't surprised in the slightest is Liverpool legend Carragher. The ex-England defender took aim at Ronaldo on Twitter, accusing the United No.7 of doing exactly what he anticipated whilst showing no "love" for the club – a prickly post which prompted a fiery exchange with fellow Sky Sports pundit Neville.

In response to the news Ronaldo has requested to leave Old Trafford this summer, Carragher wrote: "Ronaldo did exactly what I thought he would do, score goals but make the team worse. The transfer request also kills the idea he turned down Man City because of his love for Man United," before ending the post with a laughing face emoji.

Within minutes, Neville jumped to the United legend's defence, all the while accusing Carragher on being "full of himself" and encouraging the former Red to savour Liverpool's "short period of success". Neville's reply read: "I get it, you’re full of yourselves.

"But he can turn down City for United because he likes them more and still want to leave this summer. He left before but still loved the club. Enjoy Saturday night and your short period of success," followed by a thumbs up emoji.

But the social media spat didn't end there. Carragher responded by tweeting 20 laughing face emojis, before branding his colleague a clown and poking fun at Neville's giddy reaction to Ronaldo completing a sensational Old Trafford return last summer.

"City didn’t want him you [clown emoji] and you’re the same fella who kept saying it was like Elvis had arrived in Manchester! Elvis has left the building," Carragher retorted followed by three laughing face emojis.

Neville's riposte saw him reference one of Elvis' greatest hits within a witty play on words, as he wrote: "Little less conversation," followed by praying hands. Carragher simply responded with a dancing man emoji and two more laughing faces. The ex-Liverpool man has made no secret of the fact he felt United made a "mistake" in re-signing Ronaldo last summer.
