Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher continued their dispute over whether Trent Alexander-Arnold should play for England at the Euros in the car park and taxi ride home in a hilarious video after their entertaining jousting match on Sky Sports.

The two pundits locked horns over a number of matters in a fierce TV debate about who should make Gareth Southgate’s squad this summer, with Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold one of the key points of discussion.

Both agreed they would include the right-back in their 23-man squad, but Carragher was left perplexed by Neville’s claims that Southgate would leave him out after his recent omission.

Liverpool defender was omitted from England’s squad for last month’s World Cup qualifiers

‘He’s getting everyone used to the fact that this incredible talent is not going to the tournament unless someone gets injured,’ Neville said on Monday Night Football.

Neville added: ‘So I’m saying to myself in a a one-off game, in a tournament, in a quarter or semi final, I ask who England are going to be playing? They’re going to be playing Germany, Belgium, France, Portugal.

‘Who he’s going to be playing against? (Eden) Hazard, (Kylian) Mbappe, (Leroy) Sane, (Diogo) Jota and (Cristiano) Ronaldo.

‘Who do they want to play against? (Reece) James, (Kyle) Walker or Trent? They’ll say, I’ll let Trent go forward, he’ll leave space behind.’

Carragher leapt to the defence of Alexander-Arnold, with Neville saying in a live Instagram video after the show that his ‘excellent punditry’ had been ‘rubbished by the scouse mafia’ as the pair traded off again on their way home.

The two traded barbs with one another in the video, with Neville calling his fellow pundit ‘Boris Carragher’ and the ex-Liverpool defender joking that he was ‘bullying Trent Alexander-Arnold’

‘Well I can’t believe what I’ve just been exposed to, the scouse Mafia in full flow,’ Neville said in the video.

‘I’ve delivered three bits of excellent punditry tonight that has basically been rubbished by gobs**** here (points the camera at Carragher). I mean he’s telling me at the end, he played under Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez playing the most boring football for the last 20 years, and all of a sudden he’s turned into Johan Cruyff.’

‘You would pick Ward-Prowse over Trent [Alexander-Arnold] who has won a Champions League, a Club World Cup and a Premier League,’ Carragher replied before making a jibe about Neville’s role in England’s ‘negative’ 2014 World Cup campaign.

‘This guy has got a serious problem with Trent, he’s always had a problem with people from Liverpool haven’t you? That’s why he doesn’t like Trent. You’ve got a problem because people say he’s one of the best right-backs.’

Carragher insisted that Alexander-Arnold is one of the most creative players for England

He also made a jibe about Neville’s role in England’s ‘negative’ 2014 World Cup campaign

‘Slow down, come on people can’t tell what you’re saying. We can’t get subtitles on here,’ Neville said in a tongue-in-cheek response.

‘Honestly I know how Keir Starmer feels, he’s trying to make considered messages and he’s just getting basically absolutely rubbished by a buffoon and there he is, Boris Carragher.’

At this point in the video, the former Liverpool and Manchester United defenders received a telling off from one of the security guards in the car park before they continue their quarrel in the taxi ride home.

‘Stop bullying Trent Alexander-Arnold. Sammy Lee has just texted me: “Your mate wouldn’t take Trent, wow”.’ Carragher said laughing.

‘Yeah I know what Trent has done, but he played for Liverpool at that time, can you get that in your heads? He’s now playing for England with 35 per cent possession. Stop coming at me. Goodness gracious me,’ Neville added in response to live comments from Liverpool fans.

FULL TRANSCRIPT FROM NEVILLE AND CARRAGHER’S QUARREL

Neville: Well I can’t believe what I’ve just been exposed to, the scouse Mafia in full flow.

I’ve delivered three bits of excellent punditry tonight that has basically been rubbished by gobs**** here (points the camera at Carragher). I mean he’s telling me at the end, he played under Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez playing the most boring football for the last 20 years, and all of a sudden he’s turned into Johan Cruyff.

He’s picked three right-backs, nine defenders and [Jordan] Henderson and [Declan] Rice in midfield and wants to dominate possession. I mean seriously can you explain how you’re going to do that?

Carragher: Can England win a tournament playing that way? You’ve done it for so often, you’ve managed.

Neville: You’ve picked nine defenders?

Carragher: I can play a back five.

Neville: You think you can dominate possession with a back five, and Rice and Henderson?

Carragher: So didn’t the England manager Gareth Southgate when he went to play three at the back and got us to a World Cup semi-final? Playing three at the back was all about getting on the ball and coming out with the ball. How many times did Harry Maguire come out with the ball?

Neville: Did they? Against Croatia? Croatia battered them, on the ball.

Carragher: I know they did in that game but didn’t they play the back three, was that not part of getting on the ball? Wasn’t Gareth Southgate supposed to be a different manager technically, opposed to what you did with Roy Hodgson when you went really negative at the World Cup.

Neville: He’s picked nine defenders.

Carragher: Because I would play a back five and I would pick one of those defenders in midfield but you would pick Ward-Prowse over Trent [Alexander-Arnold] who has won a Champions League, a Club World Cup and a Premier League.

This guy has got a serious problem with Trent, he’s always had a problem with people from Liverpool haven’t you?

Neville: Yeah.

Carragher: That’s why he doesn’t like Trent. You’ve got a problem because people say he’s one of the best right-backs.

Neville: Slow down, come on people can’t tell what you’re saying. We can’t get subtitles on here. Honestly I know how Keir Starmer feels, he’s trying to make considered messages and he’s just getting basically absolutely rubbished by a buffoon and there he is, Boris Carragher.

Carragher: Stop bullying Trent Alexander-Arnold. Sammy Lee has just texted me: “Your mate wouldn’t take Trent, wow.”

Neville: Honestly do you know what they’re like. How do you get a light on here. We are in the back of the car, we’re going back to the hotel. Can we get a light on here mate (to the Taxi driver). You can’t leave me in here in the back in the dark with a scouser.

Yeah I know what Trent has done, but he played for Liverpool at that time, can you get that in your heads? He’s now playing for England with 35 per cent possession. Stop coming at me. Goodness gracious me.

Carragher: You were bullying him tonight, I thought that was a bit unfair.

Neville: I absolutely love him to bits, he’s a brilliant player.

Carragher: Some of the things you said in the meeting I thought was a bit harsh.

Neville: Jamie said in the meeting today that he could see Trent playing in midfield in the future because he isn’t a good enough defender.

Carragher: Do you think I really said that?

Neville: He did say that, I guarantee it. One thing you’ll always get from Keir Starmer is the truth. Not from Boris over there. He’s always on his phone getting texts from his mates. “Yeah you did him there, you did him there. You done them there, our kid.”

Trent in midfield, yeah he did say that.

Carragher: Why couldn’t he end up in midfield?

Neville: Oh hang on, why would he end up in midfield if he could become the best right-back in the world?

Carragher: Who said he was going to be the best right-backs in the world?

You said he shouldn’t even be in the England squad because he couldn’t cope.

Neville: Are you winding me up? Why would Trent go in midfield, answer the question?

Carragher: I said if Liverpool become a team who aren’t as good as they are.

Neville: Like England?

Carragher: Yeah maybe. He doesn’t have to go into midfield, I said he could be used in midfield as I said tonight. That’s why I put, you’re calling it three right-backs, Kyle Walker, right centre-back of a three so you’ve got a wing-back role and then you can always use Trent in terms of the midfield three or in the last 20 minutes to get in that position that I don’t think anyone is better than him apart from maybe Kevin De Bruyne, but you think James Ward-Prowse is better than Trent.

Neville: I’ve never mentioned Ward-Prowse. Honestly, Boris is at it again.

Carragher: James Ward-Prowse over a guy who has won the Champions League, the Club World Cup and the Premier League.

‘You were bullying him tonight, I thought that was a bit unfair,’ Carragher said, sparking the argument back up again.

‘I absolutely love him to bits, he’s a brilliant player,’ Neville insisted.

‘Jamie said in the meeting today that he could see Trent playing in midfield in the future because he isn’t a good enough defender.’

‘Why couldn’t he end up in midfield?’ Carragher asked.

‘Oh hang on, why would he end up in midfield if he could become the best right-back in the world,’ Neville said in surprise.

‘Who said he was going to be the best right-back in the world? You said he shouldn’t even be in the England squad because he couldn’t cope,’ Carragher responded.

Pundits Neville and Carragher argued about England’s Euro 2020 squad live on TV earlier on on Monday evening

Carragher claimed Neville thinks Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse ‘is better than Trent’

The pair also argued over whether an injury to Harry Maguire (left) or Harry Kane (right) would be a bigger blow to England

‘He doesn’t have to go into midfield, I said he could be used in midfield as I said tonight. That’s why I put, you’re calling it three right-backs. Kyle Walker, right centre-back of a three so you’ve got a wing-back role and then you can always use Trent in terms of the midfield three or in the last 20 minutes to get in that position that I don’t think anyone is better than him apart from maybe Kevin De Bruyne, but you think James Ward-Prowse is better than Trent.’

During the live discussion on TV, Neville and Carragher also disagreed over who would be a bigger loss out of Harry Kane and Harry Maguire.

Neville argued his case that he believes Maguire would be the ‘biggest blow’ to the England manager’s plans if he was ruled out of the tournament.

He said on Monday Night Football: ‘If you lose Harry Maguire that’s a big problem for Gareth Southgate. I think it’s his biggest problem.

‘If you’re then left with John Stones as your other centre-back and you think you’ve got Stones and (Tyrone) Mings, Stones and (Conor) Coady, Stones and (Eric) Dier I’m not having it.’

When asked by Carragher if Maguire was a bigger loss than Kane, he then added: ‘Harry Kane’s the best player in the squad but in this particular squad if Gareth wants a back-four in the squad and go for a 4-3-3 formation, the only chance of that is keeping Harry Maguire fit.

‘You always have to think if one player gets injured where do I then go to. If Harry Kane gets injured you could go with Marcus Rashford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Raheem Sterling as a false forward or Phil Foden.

‘There are options England can still win games. But with Maguire the ability to go to a back four is lost and that’s why he’s got a three in back of his mind.

‘I think Declan Rice being injured could be a problem. I’d go Maguire just because of the lack of depth behind him, Kane is the most important player.

‘But the lack of depth behind Maguire as a dominant centre back is nil in my opinion. So Maguire, Kane then Rice are the key players you don’t want to get injured.

‘If Sterling gets injured that would be a blow but Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho, Foden, Grealish can play in that position.’
