Arsenal fans broke into a minute of applause as they paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo's son following his tragic death.

The Manchester United forward announced the heartbreaking news on his Instagram on Easter Monday. He wrote about how his newborn son had tragically died, with him taking time out of football when he missed Man Utd's match against Liverpool on Tuesday.

He wrote in an Instagram post signed by both him and his long-term partner Georgina Rodriguez: "It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

"We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you."

During United's match with Liverpool in the week, fans broke out in applause as they paid tribute to the couple's son following the news the day before, with the family thanking the fans for their support. Cristiano’s Madeira-based sister Elma showed her emotion overnight by publishing footage of the gesture on her social media and writing: “Thank you for this Liverpool. We will never forget what you did today.”
