Manchester United's Scott McTominay sparked a huge on-pitch scuffle during the first half of the Red Devils' clash with Everton on Saturday lunchtime.

McTominay had clattered into Lucas Digne, and then attempted to lift the hurt Frenchman of the Old Trafford turf.

And the Scot's actions caused Everton's Yerry Mina to come storming across and instigate a shoving battle.

After a heated exchange between Abdoulaye Doucoure and Edinson Cavani, who were quick to defend their teammates, the scuffle almost involved all 22 players on the pitch.

The situation was eventually diffused, and McTominay and Mina were given a stern talking-to from the referee, Michael Oliver.

Tensions had boiled over from the stands onto the pitch, as some United fans had called Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked for dropping Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 36-year-old was snubbed from the starting lineup after the Norwegian opted to play Cavani instead.

Ronaldo has been the difference for the Red Devils in the week as his 95th-minute goal bagged United their first Champions League win of the season.

However, he was joined on the bench by Paul Pogba, and Donny Van de Beek, who had reacted furiously to not getting game time against Villarreal.

Anthony Martial put the Red Devils ahead just before the half-time whistle.

Everton had been the better side in the first half, but a bit of genius from Bruno Fernandes to find the Frenchman was enough to unlock Rafa Benitez's defence.
