Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has confirmed that the club are checking on ‘a couple of situations’ related to Covid ahead of their EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea. If Spurs receive bad news, it could see them take on Thomas Tuchel’s formidable Blues with an under-strength squad.

Spurs continued their solid recent form on New Year’s Day by edging past Watford.

When it looked as though the north London side would have to settle for a point, Davinson Sanchez popped up to head home a 96th-minute winner.

That leaves Conte’s side within two points of fourth place, despite having played two games less than Arsenal and West Ham above them.

With their Premier League campaign shaping up nicely, attention has turned back towards their EFL Cup bid as they prepare to face Chelsea over two legs.

The first of which will get underway at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, meaning a return to a familiar stomping ground for Conte.

The Italian was in charge of Chelsea between 2016 and 2018, winning the Premier League title and an FA Cup in a fruitful spell at the helm.

But things may not go entirely his way this week, with the manager confirming a double Covid fear which could see Spurs hampered for the first leg.

“Checking a couple of situations,” he said, “We are not 100 per cent sure if [they are] going to miss the game.”
