Matteo Guendouzi fires subtle dig at Arsenal with Unai Emery praise

Unai Emery's time at Arsenal is one that few Gunners fans look back on fondly, though one positive from his reign in the Emirates dugout was the Spaniard's fondness for blooding young players.

Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe both made their debuts under Emery, while he signed Gabriel Martinelli, the first teenager to register ten goals for Arsenal in a single season since Nicolas Anelka, as well as divisive midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

The young French star boasts undeniable talent, entrusted right from the beginning of his Arsenal career – making his debut on the opening day of the 2018/19 campaign at home to champions Manchester City.

However, Guendouzi's time at Arsenal and indeed his entire career has been marred by attitude problems, with the 22-year-old having a strained relationship with current Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

In stark contrast, his relationship with Emery seems to be in a great condition, so much so that Guendouzi took to social media to pay a touching tribute to his former boss after he guided Villarreal to Europa League glory over Manchester United on Wednesday.

The midfielder wrote: "What a journey! This Football… so smart and elegant!

“You made the dream of an entire city, of a club, a team, and of all the fans come true! You did it! You know how to win trophies! Hats off Monsieur Emery.

“You are so unique.”

Guendouzi's flattering comments could be seen as a subtle shot at his parent club and their decision to sack Emery in favour of the inexperienced Arteta, despite the fact Emery did not win a silverware during his time at Arsenal while Arteta has.

The midfielder did not stop there, following up with a second tweet that read: “I am honored (sic) and proud to have had the opportunity to evolve by your side. Words will never be strong enough to qualify your personality, your benevolence and your authenticity in human relationships.

“All my congratulations coach @UnaiEmery_ and bravo to @VillarrealCF.”

Guendouzi's Arsenal career has been in step decline since Arteta's arrival, his lowest point coming after the Premier League restart against Brighton where he grabbed Neil Maupay by the throat.

It is expected that the Gunners will part ways with the midfielder in the summer, with French outfit Marseille rumoured to be in pole position to sign him.
