MARK CLATTENBURG: Ashley Barnes' elbow on Tyrone Mings looked bad

MARK CLATTENBURG: Ashley Barnes’ elbow on Tyrone Mings looked bad and I can understand why many thought the Burnley striker should have been sent off… it was strange he wasn’t even given a yellow card

  • Ashley Barnes elbowed Tyrone Mings in the face in Burnley draw with Aston Villa
  • But the Burnley striker somehow managed to escape the incident unpunished
  • Barnes then went on to score a penalty for the Clarets to help secure a vital draw
  • The forward was very fortunate to not even pick up a card for the elbow offence

Ashley Barnes went on to score Burnley’s opener from the spot at Villa Park but I can understand why some people think he shouldn’t have been on the pitch.

His elbow on Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings looked bad, particularly in slow motion.

Professional players always argue that this is a red, feeling it is a violent and deliberate act. They would say it didn’t matter whether or not Barnes was looking at Mings. This is where referees — who usually see this as a straightforward yellow — would benefit from having been players.

On this occasion, referee Paul Tierney strangely didn’t show any card at all.

Burnley secured a vital point at Villa on Thursday night in their battle against Premier League relegation, with Barnes scoring his first goal in 15 months from the penalty spot.

In the early stages of the Premier League encounter at Villa Park, Barnes had jumped to contest an aerial ball with Tyrone Mings, catching the England international in the face in the process with his elbow, but he avoided punishment for the foul.

Barnes leaped for a header while not looking at Mings and pleaded his innocence after the match.

The striker would later give Burnley the lead from the penalty spot at Villa Park

‘I don’t even know what I had done until I came in at half-time and I had a few fingers pointed in my face,’ Barnes told Sky Sports post-match. ‘I can’t see anything wrong or what I have done.’

Buendia made amends for Villa in the second half after giving away the penalty by scoring the equaliser for Steven Gerrard’s outfit.

Burnley now head into the final day of the season at home to Newcastle knowing that they will survive another season in the top flight if they can match Leeds United’s result at Brentford.
