Interim ECB chief Connor to step down as MD of England women's cricket

Interim ECB chief executive Clare Connor to step down as MD of England women’s cricket after counties voiced concerns about her workload and potential conflicts of interest

  • Clare Connor takes up the role of ECB interim chief executive next month
  • She is also MCC president and is leading a review into dressing-room culture
  • Now Connor and ECB have concluded she can’t also run the women’s game

Clare Connor is to step down as managing director of England women’s cricket when she takes up the role of ECB interim chief executive next month.

Sportsmail revealed that there are concerns among the counties about Connor’s workload and potential conflicts of interest, given the former England captain is also president of the MCC, as well as tasked with leading a review into dressing-room culture following cricket’s racism scandals.

Now Connor and the ECB have concluded it will be impossible for her to combine the job of interim chief executive with running the women’s game.

The ECB had faced criticism from the counties over the appointment of Clare Connor

The decision was communicated to the counties on Thursday.

Beth Barrett-Wild is among a number of highly-rated internal candidates for managing director of women’s cricket.

The ECB have rejected criticisms of Connor’s independence with regard to the culture review, insisting that much of the work has been contracted out.

Connor has been parachuted into the top job at Lord’s following Tom Harrison’s resignation
