Marcus Rashford says Manchester United must end trophy drought

Marcus Rashford calls on Manchester United to ‘get over the line’ this season and end their three-year trophy drought after losing THREE semi-finals under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020

  • Manchester United last tasted silverware success under Jose Mourinho in 2017
  • The club reached three semi-finals last season but suffered defeat in them all
  • A strong start to the season means expectations at Old Trafford are high again
  • Marcus Rashford believes United need to ‘get over the line’ and end the drought

Marcus Rashford has insisted Manchester United need to clinch silverware in 2021 following several near misses last season.

United have fallen short of lifting their first trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite reaching three semi-finals under him, but expectations are high once again after their fine start to domestic life this time around.

And star forward Rashford, who enjoyed a memorable 2020 both on and off the field, has underlined the desire at Old Trafford to bring back their glory days.

Marcus Rashford insisted Manchester United must win trophies this season after near misses

‘The platform has been there for a while and in this last year we’ve taken greater steps forward which is obviously a positive for us,’ he said in an interview on the club’s official website.

‘We missed out on winning some trophies, losing in the semi-finals and that’s what we need to correct in the coming year and make sure we get over the line and win trophies.

‘That’s the next thing for us to do as a team then it’s about doing it consistently and being able to repeat it back-to-back which is more difficult than getting it the first time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer steered United to three semi-finals last year but his team lost all of them

‘We’ve still got a long journey ahead of us, but at the moment we’re in a good place and we’re concentrating on ourselves and our team and just trying to improve ourselves in each game.’

The last time United tasted glory was in 2017, under Jose Mourinho, although the club have recently come close to breaking their three-year duck.

Defeats to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Chelsea in the FA Cup and Sevilla in the Europa League, all at the semi-final stage, meant Solskjaer’s side were unable to mark their late season surge with tangible success.

Rashford, who netted his 50th Premier League goal – and his 80th for his club – in United’s dramatic win over Wolves, will prove crucial to achieving their lofty targets.

Rashford, who had a fine 2020 on and off the field, hopes to help United achieve their targets

He added: ‘My main aim is to help the team and, as a forward, it’s goals and assists that do that so the more of them I can get is the best for the team.

‘That’s what I’m concentrating on doing and ultimately that’s what is going to help the team pick up points and if we have three or four of us that are playing in that way and trying to help each other score, then we can have big possibilities this season.’

The 20-time top-flight champions will be able to move level on points with Liverpool with victory over Aston Villa on Friday night.
