Manchester United legend Phil Neville agrees with Gary Neville about Paul Pogba

Man Utd: Neville pops champagne as Red Devils go joint-top

Manchester United star Paul Pogba was rightly awarded a penalty in Friday’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa, according to Red Devils legend Phil Neville. Pogba was adjudged by referee Michael Oliver to have been fouled by Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz with the score at 1-1 at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes scored the resulting spot-kick to take United to level on points with leaders Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.

Replays showed that Pogba appeared to trip himself, though it was unclear if a touch from Luiz caused the Frenchman to fall to the ground.

Villa boss Dean Smith was not happy with the decision, with fans on social media also annoyed with the decision.

Former United right-back Gary Neville was co-commentating on the match for Sky Sports and believed the right decision was made.

And his brother Phil agreed that Pogba deserved the penalty.

“No [debate], I think it was a good decision from Michael Oliver,” Phil Neville told Premier League Productions.

“There was a clash of legs, a clip on the back of Paul Pogba.

“He did really well from the throw-in, you see just there, he opened up that left-hand side, let the ball run across him.

“Now he’s grappling with him and he just clips his legs there, Luiz.

“He’s unlucky, he’s unlucky because he’s trying to get in front of him.

“You see there, his arms are trying to get across him, so big Paul Pogba. Just a little clip there, unlucky but it was a penalty.

Former United striker Michael Owen agreed with Neville that the penalty decision was correct.

Owen said: “I think it was a penalty. You know me, I’m not quite sure on a lot of these touches and people going down easily this season, but I thought that was enough for a penalty.”

However, Villa boss Smith says VAR should have at least advised Oliver to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

“My view was it was a penalty from where I was standing,” Smith said.

“I thought Douglas Luiz got too tight with Paul Pogba but then I’ve just gone in and seen it back and I think he’s just tripped himself up.

“I think there’s enough doubt there to send the referee over to the screen.

“A dubious penalty has lost us the game.”
