Manchester United want to sign Jadon Sancho because they feel Mason Greenwood will end up being their replacement for Edinson Cavani, according to reports. The Borussia Dortmund star has long been of interest to the Red Devils. And a blockbuster switch could finally happen in this summer’s transfer window.

Manchester United, not for the first time, are primed to pursue Sancho again.

They first wanted to land the Borussia Dortmund star four years ago, when it became clear he was ready to leave Manchester City.

But that didn’t happen, with Sancho choosing to chance his arm by heading overseas instead.

The Red Devils have also tried to land the 21-year-old in 2019 and 2020 but, on both occasions, missed out.

And now, after tying Cavani down to a new contract over at Old Trafford, they’re readying yet another crack at the England star.

United have revived interest in the young forward, who has scored 14 goals and registered 18 assists across all competitions so far this term.

And the Mirror say they want Sancho because they feel Greenwood will end up replacing Cavani down the middle of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack.

The Uruguay international has scored 15 goals across all competitions this term, finally announcing himself in English football in the process.

There had been fears when he signed that he’d be another Alexis Sanchez, Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria – three South American players who toiled at the club.

But Cavani has put those doubts to bed by scoring eight goals in his last 10 appearances.

Greenwood has been learning from the 34-year-old on and off the pitch and worked particularly closely with the veteran during the last international break.

And he’s been a player transformed in the time since, scoring eight goals from his last 12 matches.

Greenwood has spent the majority of his time in the first team playing on the right wing, an area the club have struggled in over the years.

But there’s a sense that, in the foreseeable future, he’ll be moved centrally.

United would then likely have Sancho on the right and Marcus Rashford, who has netted 21 times this season, on the opposite flank.

And whether they’re successful in signing the Dortmund star, after years of courting his signature, remains to be seen.

Speaking recently, United legend Rio Ferdinand had his say on Sancho.

And he urged his old team to strike a deal, while also imploring them to move for Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos.

“For the third season on the spin he’s got 30+ goal involvements,” he said.

“This is for a 21-year-old kid! I don’t care where he’s playing, he’s in the Bundesliga, it’s ridiculous for anyone to be saying he shouldn’t be in the England squad.

“The kid is the real deal and someone like Man United or whoever, one of the top teams, has to go out and get this boy because he brings the playground to the stadiums.

“If any team is in the market for a centre-back, right now, out of the top teams, with the finances, Marquinhos is the only place I’m going.

“Big-game player. Every big game you see that guy play he turns up.

“Fit as you like, quick, robust, hardened, battle-hardened, understands the big-game environments.

“Top, top player, great attitude, leader, got it all. ‘If I’m looking for a centre-back of experience who can take me to the next level, he’s the one I’m going for.”
