Man Utd’s four managerial options if Ten Hag decides to quit because of Glazers

Erik ten Hag wants Man Utd to use FA Cup final defeat as motivation

With Manchester United enduring yet another sluggish start to a transfer window, Erik ten Hag is fed up. The Dutchman is unhappy at the delay to proceedings, with the Glazers yet to sanction any signings while takeover talk continues to rumble on. And given the 53-year-old’s worsening mood, a departure from Old Trafford can’t be entirely and totally ruled out.

To make things clear, there’s nothing to currently suggest that Ten Hag is tempted to throw in the towel at United.

But with the Dutchman growing increasingly unhappy, is it really beyond the realms of possibility?

Ten Hag, like his predecessors, was sold a dream at United. One that would enable him to build, in his own words, the ‘best team in the world’.

It’s clear United need reinforcements, especially with fierce rivals Manchester City winning the treble last season.

But they’re dragging their feet and with the teams around them already strengthening, United are playing catch-up once again.

Therefore, Ten Hag could be forgiven for throwing in the towel. Express Sport now looks at four options the club would potentially turn to if that happened.

Julian Nagelsmann

Julian Nagelsmann would likely be top of any possible United shortlist.

He was earmarked as a future manager by the hierarchy a few years ago, when he was manager of RB Leipzig.

Nagelsmann did well enough at Bayern Munich prior to his surprise sacking earlier in the year.

And while he was expected to take over at Tottenham or Paris Saint-Germain this summer, those ships appear to have sailed.

Again, we must stress this list is purely hypothetical. But if one ended up being made, Nagelsmann’s name would surely feature.

Ruud van Nistelrooy

Ruud van Nistelrooy guided PSV Eindhoven to the Dutch Cup back in May.

However, he then surprised everybody by quitting his job at the club after believing his secrets were being spilled from the inside.

United hired former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager back in 2018 before giving the Norwegian the job permanently the following year.

And they could be tempted to let history repeat itself, with Van Nistelrooy already established.

He’d be popular among fans, but likely not at the expense of Ten Hag – who has the overwhelming support of all who follow and love the club.

Zinedine Zidane

If Ten Hag was to quit United, the Glazers would face a bigger backlash than anything seen before.

It would be the ultimate kick in the teeth for fans, with the Dutchman clearly the best man for the job.

But in order to get supporters back onside, United would then potentially go down the route of hiring a big name.

They don’t come much bigger than Zinedine Zidane, who won three Champions League titles on the trot during his first spell at Real Madrid.

Zidane hasn’t rushed into management since leaving Real in 2021 and he’d be an exciting name for the role.

Antonio Conte

United have turned down Antonio Conte in the past.

But if Ten Hag was to jump ship, it would leave them with a substantial dilemma.

Conte brings baggage and problems, as his recent spell at Tottenham shows.

Yet he’s still a serial winner having claimed silverware at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan over the years.

It would divide many, but United wouldn’t have too many options to fall back on.
