Man Utd told Paul Pogba contract extension offer is a "sign of desperation"

Manchester United are set to offer Paul Pogba a bumper contract extension before his current deal expires in the summer – but have been criticised for showing desperation in their attempts.

The France international midfielder has not yet committed to either leaving or staying at Old Trafford, but might find it tricky to reject a long-term agreement as he approaches his 29th birthday.

With Juventus, PSG and Real Madrid all linked to the World Cup winner, United will be growing concerned over seeing him go for nothing following his £95million move in 2016.

With the Mail reporting that Pogba will be offered a significant increase on his current £290,000-a-week wage packet, Paul Ince doesn't think it's a good look for the club.

Ince told The United Stand this week: "That's a sign of desperation from Manchester United in offering that contract.

"Obviously, they're trying to persuade him to sign this deal. It's a lot of money for someone who has been in and out of the side.

"He was on the bench two weeks ago against Everton and then all of a sudden you're saying: 'Here's £400k-a-week!'

"Ultimately, if you're paying that type of money for a player, he has to play every game and we're not seeing Paul Pogba play every game."

Pogba has made 208 appearances for the club since his return from Juventus, scoring 38 goals including 16 during a memorable 2018/19 campaign.

After winning four consecutive Serie A title with his former side, he is yet to win the Premier League and hasn't picked up a club winners' medal since the Europa League in 2017.

Despite not scoring so far this season across nine appearances, he has managed an impressive seven assists in his seven Premier League outings.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said when asked about Pogba's future earlier this season: "It's been spoken and written about so often but every discussion I have had with Paul (Pogba) is a positive one.

"He knows what we want and hopefully it stays in the background and Paul and us will make a decision together.

"It (the situation) will always be like this with Paul – he's a media 'magnet'."
