Man Utd to move for River Plate ace Enzo Fernandez with four midfielders to exit

Manchester United are set to make a move for River Plate midfielder Enzo Fernandez as they look to overhaul their midfield with four stars leaving.

United may already have one Fernandes in their ranks as Bruno occupies a more attacking role, but they are set to double up on talent in the middle of the park, this time with a highly-rated defensive option. United scouts saw the Argentine score in Wednesday's 2-0 win against Fortaleza in the Copa Libertadores.

With Erik ten Hag verbally agreeing to be United's new manager, it could be one of the first signings under the Dutchman, should he give the move the green light. But with four midfielders set to leave, signing Fernandez could be key as United look to replenish their squad for next season.

United have been eyeing a new defensive midfielder for some time, and with Nemanja Matic confirming his departure at the end of the season, they will need reinforcements. But he isn't the only one, as Paul Pogba is also expected to leave along with Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.

The 21-year-old River Plate star will have a £20.6million release clause this summer, and is currently on the radar of Real Madrid and Manchester City as United have been urged to act fast. But they will want to get their midfield acquisitions right with such, and Fernandez isn't the only name on their list.

United have also been linked with England duo Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips, but they have been warned by their Premier League rivals that deals would be extremely expensive. West Ham boss David Moyes has already placed a £150m price-tag on his star man Rice.

And United have also been linked with Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, but it's likely that Champions League qualification would be a must to tempt any big names within Europe. After picking up just one point against Leicester and Everton, United are massive underdogs to make the top four, and they could see their summer business impacted.

Champions League football is of course something that incoming boss Ten Hag would have wanted, but if they fail to reach Europe's elite competition could also play into his hands. The Dutchman has demanded that he wants a huge say in all signings to become United boss, and he will be trusted to make the right moves to get them back into the top four.

One midfielder that is set to finally be considered is Donny van de Beek, as the Dutchman has been an outcast ever since moving from Ajax in 2020. Ten Hag was the man who sold him to United, and now the pair look set to be reunited.
