Manchester United are reportedly finalising a January agreement to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. The Netherlands international has been in sensational form this season, scoring 16 goals across all competitions and enhancing his reputation as one of the best young players in world football. And, now, a move to Old Trafford in the New Year could be on the cards…

Manchester United strengthened their attack by signing Antony back in the summer, with the Brazil international moving from Ajax in a huge £86million deal.

But they could now move for Gakpo, too.

It was claimed over the weekend that United were in the process of finalising an agreement to acquire the 23-year-old.

With Cristiano Ronaldo inconsistent, and injuries hampering Anthony Martial, it’s certainly feasible that United are on the lookout for more offensive reinforcements.

So Express Sport will now take a look at the shirt numbers available to Gakpo if he ends up joining in January.

No 11

The No 11 shirt is technically still occupied at United by Mason Greenwood, who hasn’t played for the club since January.

And given Gakpo dons the same jersey for PSV Eindhoven, it’s possible he’ll take it should a move to Old Trafford take place.

The No 11 is pretty special at United due to Ryan Giggs, who wore the digits on his back throughout the majority of his spell at the club when they were a major force under Sir Alex Ferguson.

No 13

Lee Grant left United back in the summer, having spent four years at the club after being recruited by Jose Mourinho in 2018.

And that means his No 13 shirt is free for Gakpo or any other new signings to take.

Ji-Sung Park was arguably the best occupant of the jersey in recent years, with the South Korea international winning five Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford.

No 15

Another player to leave United in the summer was Andreas Pereira, who departed for Fulham.

And that means the No 15 is available.

It was worn by Adnan Januzaj for a period but Nemanja Vidic did it the most justice, with the Serbia international becoming a cult hero at the club following his arrival in January 2006.

No 16

Amad is the occupant of the No 16 shirt at United but, right now, is spending the season on loan at Sunderland.

That means the Red Devils would be within their right to allocate his jersey but, given how that would be a blow for the Ivory Coast international, it would certainly be a risky move.

Amad remains highly-rated by United, despite struggling for game time following his arrival from Atalanta in January 2021.

No 24

The No 24 shirt was worn by Darren Fletcher during his prime years at United, with the Scotland international another key servant of the Ferguson era.

These days, however, nobody sports the jersey at Old Trafford.

Tim Fosu-Mensah was the last player to do so, with the defender previously tipped for a bright future before being allowed to leave by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

No 26

Like Amad, Dean Henderson is another player United have chosen to loan out this season.

The goalkeeper is doing well enough at Nottingham Forest and, at the end of the season, is expected to return to the Red Devils to challenge David De Gea for a starting berth.

With Henderson temporarily gone, however, his No 26 shirt could go to Gakpo – who usually wears it for the Netherlands national team.
