Man Utd lose key staff member who served under Sir Alex Ferguson after 16 years

Manchester United have announced that club doctor Steve McNally is set to step down from his role after 16 years to take on a new job at the PGMOL.

Serving under the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, McNally joined the backroom staff at Carrington in 2006, during which the club has won the Champions League, the Club World Cup and five Premier League titles, and currently holds the position of Head of Football Medicine and Science.

McNally has been tasked with getting Man Utd's first-team stars back to full fitness after injury but will now step away from his role at the end of January.

His new job will see him take the reins as Performance Support Director for PGMOL, the organisation in charge of match officials in English professional football.

Speaking on his departure, McNally said: "Leaving Manchester United after 16 years was a very difficult decision but I feel the time is right to step away from frontline provision at club level and utilise my experience in a new strategic role that will allow me to contribute to another vital aspect of the game.

"Alongside the directors, managers, players, coaches and colleagues from all departments past and present, I am proud to have been a small part of Manchester United’s recent history and thank them all wholeheartedly for their friendship, camaraderie and support.

"I will miss the United family but until I take up my new post, I remain fully focused on helping all our teams build on the first half of this season, in particular Erik and his staff in preparation for the resumption after the World Cup."

Dr Jim Moxon, formerly a club doctor at Premier League rivals Liverpool, is set to step into the role on a temporary basis while the club searches for a permanent appointment.
