Carabao Cup final’s new date as Man City take on Tottenham at Wembley

Manchester City will take on Tottenham in this year's Carabao Cup final after beating their rivals at Old Trafford.

John Stones opened the scoring for City, prodding home a cross early in the second half. Fernandinho then wrapped up the win with a fine strike on the edge of the box. For United, it means yet another semi-final defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Tottenham, however, sealed their place in the final with a win over Brentford on Tuesday evening. Goals from Moussa Sissoko and Heung-min Son confirmed the win over the Championship outfit.

City and Spurs will face off at Wembley at a much later date than in previous years with this year's final taking place on April 25 .

The 2018 and 2019 finals took place in late February while last year's was on March 1.

With the semi-finals taking place in early January, both City and Spurs will now have to wait three-and-a-half months to fight it out for their first piece of silverware of the season.

The reason for this year's later date is the organisers hope fans will be allowed back in stadiums by late April.

Speaking after the Spurs win on Tuesday, Mourinho said he is instructing his players to forget about the final.

"The next match is always a match we want to try to win but now we have this final in the pocket for three months. We are going to wait for the final.

"Normally we play in February I guess. Now we have three months waiting for this final so we have to forget it. We have to focus on what we have – we have FA Cup to play, Premier League, Europa League even before the final so let's forget it.

"It's a final we have in the and when the 20-something of April arrives we have to be ready to go there and fight for the trophy."
