Man Utd have three transfer alternatives after Liverpool ‘hijack’ Amrabat deal

Reaction to the VAR decision that cost Wolves a penalty against Man Utd | Football Digest

Liverpool are attempting to hijack Manchester United’s pursuit of Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat as the Red Devils continue to stall on their transfer plans. The Moroccan has been a target over the past month as Erik ten Hag hopes to reinforce his midfield but the club have been hamstrung financially by the ongoing takeover and Financial Fair Play concerns. Should Liverpool beat United to Amrabat this summer, the club will have to react and Express Sport has looked at three options Ten Hag and co have with just over two weeks left of the window remaining.

Sign Amadou Onana

United have already opened talks with Everton over the possibility of signing Belgium international Amadou Onana according to The Guardian, as Ten Hag may opt for more physicality in the middle of the pitch especially if Scott McTominay does depart Old Trafford.

However, if United are unable to press forward with Amrabat they similarly would not be able to meet the Toffees’ asking price of £50m for Onana, though the situation could change if West Ham return for McTominay.

Keep Scott McTominay

West Ham had been interested in McTominay alongside Harry Maguire, but after a deal for the former United skipper collapsed and deals were confirmed for the Hammers to land James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez, David Moyes may no longer have a burning need to bring McTominay to the London Stadium.

United had been reliant on the sales of Fred, McTominay and Donny van de Beek but with less interest in the Scot and Van de Beek’s move to Real Sociedad collapsing, the pair could remain part of Ten Hag’s squad.

While youngster Kobbie Mainoo could be reintegrated after impressing during pre-season, but he will miss the opening few weeks of the season through injury – United have options in the squad already if they decide against adding another midfielder.

Get Liverpool revenge with Ryan Gravenberch

United will understandably be frustrated at the prospect of missing out on one of their targets to rivals Liverpool, but have the perfect opportunity to enact revenge on Jurgen Klopp’s side by signing Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch despite the Reds’ interest.

He does favour a move to Old Trafford ahead of Anfield according to Foot Mercato and could help fill a gap in Ten Hag’s midfield, having grown frustrated at a lack of opportunities in Germany under Julian Naglesmann and then Thomas Tuchel.

United have opened discussions to land the Netherlands international and could get one over on Liverpool, having possibly been beaten to Amrabat by the Reds – who are also closing in on Stuttgart midfielder Wataru Endo in a £16m deal.
