Man Utd ‘draw up Lautaro Martinez transfer plan’ with three players involved

Erik ten Hag reviews Man Utd's win against Fulham

Manchester United are eyeing a potential move for Lautaro Martinez in the summer transfer window, according to reports. The Inter Milan star has been impressive for the Serie A giants this season, scoring 28 goals and clocking up 11 assists across all competitions. And with three other targets difficult to sign, it appears contingency plans are behind made behind the scenes.

GiveMeSport say United are ‘waiting for clarity’ over top transfer options Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen and Dusan Vlahovic as they seek a new striker.

But Martinez is being eyed as a potential backup should the Red Devils fail to land any of their three preferred targets.

Tottenham are reluctant to let Kane go, particularly after his 30 Premier League goals this season.

The England international has a year left on his contract to run, meaning Spurs face selling him this summer or losing him for nothing in a year.

United would love to make Kane the focal point of their attack, with Erik ten Hag determined to land an upgrade on the likes of Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst.

But Tottenham may price them out of a deal, which is why the Red Devils are exploring their options behind the scenes.

Napoli also want huge money to let Osimhen go after his goals fired them to their first Serie A title since 1990.

And there’s apparently a feeling that Vlahovic may stay loyal to Juventus in the wake of their recent points deduction, with the Old Lady missing out on Champions League football as a result.

As well as Martinez, Goncalo Ramos is ‘another name under the microscope’.

Yet Benfica ‘are set to fight for a high transfer fee’, with United having concerns about the ‘efficiency’ of his game as well.

The report adds that United may be able to sign Martinez for a price of around £60million.

And should a deal be struck for that amount, it would make the 25-year-old one of the priciest signings in the club’s history.

Only Casemiro, Romelu Lukaku, Jadon Sancho, Harry Maguire, Antony and Paul Pogba have cost the club more over the years.

United have a good relationship with Inter, having negotiated three deals with the Serie A giants in recent years.

Back in 2019, Lukaku was offloaded to the Italian titans after falling out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Alexis Sanchez then followed, having only arrived from Arsenal 18 months previously.

And, in the January transfer window of 2020, Ashley Young was permitted to move to Inter after seven-and-a-half years at the club.

Speaking earlier in the season, meanwhile, Paul Scholes opened up on United and their search for a new striker.

The former midfielder then hailed Martinez, insisting the 25-year-old would be the perfect fit for Ten Hag’s side.

“I like Lautaro Martinez at Inter Milan,” he said in March. “I think he’s Ten Hag’s type of player.

“He likes a centre-forward who will run about, be aggressive, get against people. There are options.

“I like Manchester United’s centre-forwards as they are. I like Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial.

“We all know the quality they’ve got. There are options out there and let’s hope we can bring one in.”
