Manchester United have officials in Madrid working on a deal for Atletico Madrid centre-forward Joao Felix, according to reports in Spain. The Red Devils have seemingly turned attention to the tricky Portuguese attacker as part of their plan to potentially replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who seems destined to quit the club before the September 1 transfer deadline.
Intriguingly, Ronaldo continues to be linked with a move to Atletico Madrid but the La Liga outfit continue to distance themselves from said rumours.
United had been targeting 23-year-old attacker Matheus Cunha before both the player and Atletico ruled out a move this summer.
Now Spanish newspaper Marca claim United officials are in Madrid to start work on an audacious swoop for Felix and a meeting has already taken place in a Madrid hotel.
The Red Devils are said to have met face-to-face with the attacker’s entourage in a bid to entice Felix into a move to Old Trafford.
It could prove a difficult sell at the moment though after United lost their two opening games of the Premier League season to Brighton and Brentford.
Meanwhile, Atletico were off to a flyer – hammering Getafe 3-0 on the road – as Felix started in attack alongside Alvaro Morata.
The 22-year-old is set to become Diego Simeone’s talisman in attack this season after a challenging start to life at the Wanda Metropolitano.
For that reason, Felix is likely to lean more towards staying put – particularly with the World Cup in Qatar on the horizon.

Man Utd offered striker transfer solution as Javier Hernandez offers to play ‘for free’
United had previously been offered the chance to sign Morata but he too is expected to remain at Atletico.
Erik ten Hag is in the market for a new frontman after the club pulled out of the running for Marko Arnautovic.
The bad boy Austrian frontman was the subject of a bid worth around £7.2million before supporters made their feelings known, prompting United to cool their interest.
In the past 24 hours or so, it’s also become apparent that United are targeting a shock move for Real Madrid lynchpin Casemiro.
The Brazilian is said to have seen his nose put out of joint ever so slightly following the arrival of Aurelien Tchouameni in the Spanish capital.
Casemiro found himself out of the side for the Frenchman on the opening day of the La Liga season as Los Blancos ran out 2-1 winners at Almeria.
United have only made three summer signings to date in the form of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.
The club are now working around the clock to strengthen Ten Hag’s ranks – preferably in time for Monday’s Premier League showdown with Liverpool.
