Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United are “not a million miles away” from challenging neighbours City for trophies. And he insists had the cards fallen differently this season they could have been taking on Pep Guardiola’s side in the Champions League semi-final.
PSG set up a mouthwatering last-four clash with the Premier League champions-elect when beating Bayern Munich on aggregate on Wednesday.
Yet United beat PSG in their opening Champions League group stage game only to come up short in three out of six games and drop into the Europa League.
“When you sit and watch the games and you know how well you’ve done against these teams, you know we are not a million miles away,” he said.
“It is about consistency though. It’s sometimes little details and when fine margins go against you.

“We would love to have been going through the group stage. I felt we had done enough at one point but we just couldn’t get it over line.
“But now it’s about improving again and taking inspiration from good performances against them and learning from the bad performances and results we have had.”
United are 11 points behind City with a game in hand but Solskjaer admitted it was “unrealistic” to think City would drop enough points to let the title slip.

Yet if United can hang on to second place following third his first full season in 2019-20 it represents solid foundations on which to build.
“You’ve got to make progress step by step, that’s the reality,” he said. “If we can manage second place and keep winning and get second, you want to finish strongly.
“Third last year, second this, close to a trophy. It’s progress.
“It’s not the end game – the end game is winning the league but it’s progress, step by step, and if we do that well enough, that is when you get trophies and league titles.”
United can close the gap on City to eight points tomorrow with victory over Burnley but Solskjaer is taking nothing for granted.
“The last three games against Burnley we’ve conceded two goals and not won last three home games against them.
“So it is a massive game to show the mentality my team have shown over the last 13 or 14 months.”
Marcus Rashford, who has sat out the last two games against Spurs and Granada with a niggling ankle injury, will be assessed tomorrow morning.
Possible United team:
Henderson; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, McTominay; James, Fernandes, Pogba; Cavani.
