Paul Merson’s Millwall comments live on Sky Sports age terribly

Paul Merson was left red-faced on Sky Sports after Millwall missed out on a place in the Championship play-offs following their defeat at the hands of Blackburn Rovers on a riveting final day. The Lions had started the day in sixth but dropped to eighth after Ben Brereton-Diaz struck late to claim all three points for the visitors, with Sunderland eventually clinching the final play-off spot thanks to a comfortable win over Preston North End.

Millwall made the perfect start to their afternoon when Duncan Watmore found the back of the net after just eight minutes before the south-east Londoners were quickly pegged back by a goal from Blackburn defender Scott Wharton. The hosts went on to retake the lead as Watmore doubled his tally before Oliver Burke went on to send The Den into raptures by adding a third in the 39th minute.

Merson, who was covering the game on Gilette Labs Soccer Special, was then moved to prematurely declare that Millwall had all but sealed their place in the play-offs in spite of the potential for things to go wrong for them in the second half.

“It’s 3-1 and Millwall are on their way into the play-offs, Jeff, surely,” screamed Merson. “The ball comes out to Burke on the outside and it’s a bad mistake [from Blackburn to give the ball away]. He gets into the box and drills it into the bottom corner and surely what a couple of minutes that is from Millwall, they’re on their way.”
