One of Manchester United’s top targets for the summer transfer window is believed to be Cristiano Ronaldo, more than a decade after his first spell at Old Trafford came to an end. Ronaldo has starred for Juventus, winning the Serie A golden boot for the first time this season.

But there is a feeling that the Portuguese superstar’s time in Turin could be coming to a close after three years.

While he has won two Scudettos since moving to Italy from Real Madrid, The Old Lady have failed to make it past the early knock-out rounds of the Champions League.

The 36-year-old is also entering the final year of his contract, with it appearing unlikely that he will stay at the Allianz Stadium beyond next season.

That has opened the door to a transfer this summer, with United emerging as one of the leading contenders for his signature.

JUST IN: Cristiano Ronaldo moving back to Man Utd may be prevented by Mourinho

Ronaldo had a highly successful time at Old Trafford, developing into one of the world’s best players under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He also won three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League during his time in Manchester.

Current United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer possesses a relatively inexperienced squad, but has seen the value of having a veteran presence in Edinson Cavani this term.

With the Red Devils having not won a league title since Ferguson retired in 2013, Ronaldo would also bring the invaluable experience of being a serial title winner.

But with football finances having been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, they may have to look at options other than a big money bid to bring Ronaldo back to England.

One of those options would be a straight-swap deal between Juve and United involving several players.

The Red Devils certainly possess stars who the Italian club would like, with Paul Pogba perhaps the leading candidate to be sent to Italy in return for Ronaldo.

Pogba has long been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with this summer appearing to be the perfect time for United to cut a deal as he enters the final year of his contract.

United signed Pogba from Juventus back in 2016, but it has been a largely unhappy marriage between player and club.

A sensational swap deal involving Pogba and Ronaldo has appeared to move a step closer, with Tuttosport reporting that the Frenchman’s agent has been in Turin for talks with Juve.

They claim that the “viable way” to bring Ronaldo back to the Red Devils would be to send Pogba to Italy.

It is also stated that because of the uncertainty surrounding Ronaldo’s future, this would be the “right” time for Pogba’s return to Juventus to take place.
