Manchester City are reportedly preparing to offer Erling Haaland a bumper new contract that would make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League. Luring the Norwegian into a fresh commitment would send a message to Real Madrid, who are rumoured to be interested in the red-hot marksman.

City were always likely to have bagged themselves a bargain when they triggered Haaland’s £51.4million release clause last summer. Other hidden costs inflated the true value of the deal, but there are unlikely to be any complaints at the Etihad Stadium with the 22-year-old on course to break multiple records this term.

With 42 goals in all competitions, he has already beaten the previous benchmark for a City player in a single season, and there are still plenty of matches to play. Haaland is currently contracted to the club until 2027, but The Sun claim that City are pushing for a 12-month extension.

Doing so would reportedly see the youngster’s wages jump up to £500,000 per week, putting him above the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and David de Gea as the best-paid player in England.

Etihad chiefs are supposedly preparing for talks at the end of the season in the hope of scaring off Real Madrid. A release clause is believed to be included in Haaland’s current deal, sparking speculation as to when he could seek a new challenge.

However, sources close to the former Borussia Dortmund ace reportedly indicate that he is happy in Manchester for the time being. Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola extending his own contract by another two years is likely to have boosted City’s case.

Fellow striker Julian Alvarez has already committed his future to the Sky Blues after less than one season in the Premier League, with club bosses hopeful that Haaland will follow the Argentine’s lead in signing until 2028 on improved terms.

The 6ft 5in dangerman was on fire before the international break, netting five goals against RB Leipzig and a hat-trick against Burnley in the very next game to continue building his impressive goals tally. He has, however, been struck down with a groin issue that could see him sidelined for a crunch showdown with Liverpool next weekend.

“Manchester City has a partnership with a hospital in Barcelona so he has been there for further checks and treatment,” the striker’s father told Norway’s TV 2 Sport. “Now he has been here [in Marbella] for a couple of days with the physio from the club. Firstly, I’m not a doctor and secondly, I think it’s ‘touch and go’ [for the Liverpool game], yes.

“You can’t just go two weeks without training and then jump right into a fight. There must be a progression there. They can gamble on it, but if he doesn’t get proper training with the team, then he won’t play. It is about how he responds to treatment in the next few days. He needs a lot of care.”
