Love Island star Tyrique Hyde is footballer and son of ex-Premier League ace

One of Love Island’s upcoming inductees is a footballer with an ex-Premier League star dad.

The summer series of the hit ITV show is approaching with a fresh group of singletons looking for love in the famous Majorcan villa. And they will include Tyrique Hyde, a semi-professional footballer who most recently played for non-league Lewes of the Isthmian League. He also counts Colchester, Dagenham, Dartford and Dulwich Hamlet among his former clubs.

After just missing out on a play-off place with Lewes in the season just completed, Hyde tweeted: "Wasn’t meant to be today but we fought till the end & left it all out there! Massive thank you to my team mates, the coaching staff, the fans and anyone else connected with @LewesFCMen who have shown me nothing but love since the moment I arrived, been an absolute pleasure."

Hyde will be looking for better fortunes on Love Island. After his place in the villa was confirmed, he declared: “I’ll bring vibes, confidence, good energy and honesty.

“I don’t sit on the fence, if I have an opinion I will speak up. I’m also not afraid to go after what I want.”

Hyde, who is deaf in his right ear, added: “I’ve got a tattoo next to my left one [ear] that symbolises strength and power in my good one.” Meanwhile, his Twitter bio now just reads, “I’m off to find love in the @loveisland villa!”, suggesting his focus is fully on the villa and not his football career for now.

Hyde has a well-known father, Micah, who graced the Premier League around the turn of the century after winning promotion with Graham Taylor’s Watford in 1999.

After more than 250 appearances for the Hornets, he had spells at Burnley and Peterborough. He eventually dropped into non-league, playing for the likes of Woking, Billericay Town and St Albans City.

Hyde senior opted to play for Jamaica at international level, making 17 appearances for the country between 2001 and 2004. He is also now the QPR Under-18s manager, having took up the role in 2020.

Tyrique will join the growing list of sportsmen who have graced the Love Island villa. Boxer Tommy Fury, younger brother of Tyson, is the most famous sporting figure to feature so far, while a host of semi-professional footballers have appeared as well.

The series starts on Monday, June 5.
