Lopetegui to hold crunch talks with Wolves owners over his future

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui to hold crunch talks with owners that could see him LEAVE before the start of the season after disagreements over the club’s transfer policy

  • Relations have soured between Lopetegui and the club in recent months
  • Talks will be held this week that determine the Spaniard’s future at the Molineux
  • Wolves though have been identifying successors should Lopetegui leave

Julen Lopetegui is set to hold talks with Wolves bosses this week that could result in him leaving the club before the start of the season.

The Spaniard led Wolves to Premier League survival last season after joining in November when they were bottom of the table, but relations have soured since the end of the season due to disagreements over transfer policy, placing his future in serious doubt.

Though an unexpected development can never be totally ruled out – Steve Cooper signed a new deal at Nottingham Forest last October 24 hours after the hierarchy were preparing to sack him – Lopetegui and his employers would have to do some serious bridge-building to put things back on track at this stage.

After a short break, the Wolves squad were due to resume training late in the afternoon on Tuesday, with Lopetegui scheduled to take the session as things stood on Monday night.

The 56-year-old signed a lucrative three-year deal and resigning would mean missing out on the rest of it, so discussions are likely to touch on the nature of the settlement if he is to depart.

Wolves are considering potential successors to Lopetegui should he leave the club

Wolves have been actively considering possible successors to Lopetegui and former Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil is admired by several key figures at Molineux.

O’Neil left the Cherries in June despite keeping them in the top flight with something to spare last season.
