Serena Williams fired warning by Novak Djokovic’s coach after French Open win

Novak Djokovic jokes about his age at the Australian Open

Novak Djokovic is still motivated to kick onto even greater heights despite becoming the most successful Grand Slam male tennis player of all time at Roland-Garros. And he now aims to move ahead of the honour that he shares with Serena Williams. The Serbian clinched a record 23rd major title with a straight-sets win against Casper Ruud in the French Open final.

The success in Paris moved Djokovic one slam title ahead of long-time rival Rafael Nadal who missed this year’s flagship clay court event through injury. The Spaniard is expected to retire at the end of the 2024 season, but there is no sign of Djokovic doing the same just yet and according to his coach Goran Ivanisevic, he will be looking to take his achievements to the next level.

Speaking in a press conference after the French Open final, Invanisevic said: “Winning in front of this unbelievable crowd, unbelievable stadium. So I don’t know how far along, that’s why his body is unbelievable. He’s keeping his body great. He’s in great shape.

“Thank God not too many injuries. Little here and there but not major injuries. So he’s unbelievable, and he’s still moving like a cat on the court, you know. He’s there. Like Ninja, he’s everywhere.

“So it’s fascinating to see, because sometimes you think, okay, now you have 23. But he’s gonna find, again, some kind of motivation to win 24, maybe 25, who knows where is the end.”

Rudd had started the final brightly taking a 4-1 first-set lead, but Djokovic demonstrated typical mental strength to fight his way back before winning on a tie-break in a set that lasted 90 minutes.

It was a different story in the second set however, with Djokovic racing into a 3-0 lead before serving out the set. Rudd held his own in the third up until 5-5 before losing his serve without scoring a point and that was all Djokovic needed to serve to victory, creating history in the process.

The French Open win returns the Serb to the top of the ATP Worlds Rankings for a record 389th week. His 23rd Grand Slam triumph puts him out on his own in the men’s game but not in tennis as a whole.

In the women’s game Williams holds the record for the most major titles won, also on 23. The 41-year-old has now retired, however, so just one more slam victory would put Djokovic ahead of the American legend and level with Margaret Court’s 24 Majors

By winning the French Open Djokovic has also become the first male tennis player to win all four Grand Slam titles three times or more. He has won the US Open three times, the Australian Open 10 times and Wimbledon on seven occasions.
