Liverpool star Mohamed Salah reacted “exactly the same” as how Son Heung-min did to being left on the bench last month with a hat-trick of his own against Rangers, Jonathan Woodgate noted. Jurgen Klopp’s side appeared to be on course for another frustrating match when Scott Arfield gave Rangers the lead early in the match.
Roberto Firmino quickly levelled things up for the visitors, but were far from their best once again up until the break. It was a completely different story in the second half with Firmino proving the difference once again with another goal and assist before being taken off.
Salah then came on with a raft of other substitutes as Liverpool were leading 3-1 and clearly felt in the mood to get amongst the goals. The Egypt international had come under scrutiny for his below-par start to the season with just five goals heading into the game against Rangers.
But he needed just eight minutes to get on the scoresheet against the Scottish Premiership side with a sublime touch and finish from a tight angle. Minutes later and Salah finished expertly past a helpless Allan McGregor before bagging his hat-trick not a moment after in supreme fashion.
It smashed the record for fastest Champions League hat-trick previously held by Bafetimbi Gomis with Salah scoring three in just six minutes. And Woodgate believes it was the perfect response by Salah after being dropped to the bench by Klopp, comparing it to Son’s hat-trick against Leicester last month.
“McGregor again has absolutely no chance because of the way Mohamed Salah bends it in,” Woodgate said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “When a manager leaves you out of a team, you come on and score a hat-trick. It’s exactly the same as what Son Heung-Min did for Tottenham.
“It’s Champions League dynamite.”
Son had started every league games for Tottenham in the build-up to Tottenham’s match against Leicester last month without finding the net once. Antonio Conte opted to take him out the firing line after coming under criticism, but the South Korea international responded perfectly to being dropped with a hat-trick in just 13 minutes.
And the Tottenham forward was crucial for Tottenham on Wednesday night too in their 3-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. He scored twice either side of a Harry Kane penalty as Tottenham held on for all three points and move top of their group.
