Liverpool release new 2021/22 home kit inspired by Bill Shankly’s famous words

Liverpool have officially launched their new home kit for the 2021/22 season.

The Reds have been teasing their new strip on social media this week and have now released images online of the interesting design, which has once again been produced in co-operation with sponsors Nike.

Naturally they have stuck with their usual colour, but the kit includes orange detailing on the shirt sleeve cuffs and collar.

The shirt is retailing for £69.95 on the Liverpool website, with shorts priced at £34.95 and socks at £14.95.

Announcing the release on Twitter, Liverpool's official account wrote: "It's time!"

The kit has taken inspiration from the 1964 season when then-manager Bill Shankly wanted his team in red to gain a 'psychological edge'.

"Red is for danger and red is for power," were Shankly's famous words.

An official press release described the new strip as 'full red kit detailed with bolted pinstripes and bright crimson sleeve cuffs and neckline – representing power, energy and danger.'

Jurgen Klopp's men are due to don their new ensemble for the first time against Crystal Palace this weekend in their final match of the Premier League campaign as they bid for a top four spot.

In images on Liverpoolfc.com, defender Virgil van Dijk is among those modelling the new kit in a welcome sight for fans as they hope to see the Dutchman back in action next season.

Whether the strip will feature in the Champions League remains to be seen, with everything hinging on Liverpool's result on Sunday and those of top four rivals Leicester and Chelsea.

Liverpool put qualification in their own hands on Wednesday with a convincing 3-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Roberto Firmino opened the scoring before half-time, before Nat Phillips doubled the Reds' advantage with a header shortly after the break.

Substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain then put the game beyond doubt towards the end with a superb solo effort.

Speaking after the match Klopp was shocked that his side had given themselves a chance to finish in the top four after a difficult, injury-ravaged campaign.

"I couldn't be more pleased. It is not that we took these things for granted," he said.

"February was the last time we were in the top four and we didn't win a lot of games since then. In the last eight or 10 games, I don't know how many, we are back on track.

"If we win on Sunday then we are probably qualified for the Champions League.

"It's insane that we came this close but we are not through yet. It looks like the timing is right but it is not done yet.

"When you win the semi-final you go to a final and that's where we are. We will give our absolute everything."
