Liverpool have issued a statement following news that Luis Diaz's parents have been kidnapped.

Diaz's mum, Cilenis Marulanda, and his dad, Luis Manuel Díaz, were both kidnapped last night (October 29) in Barrancas, La Guajira in Diaz's homeland of Colombia. It has been reported that the unidentified armed motorcyclists tracked down a truck that both were inside, before intercepting and boarding it just before they were taken away.

While Diaz's mother, Marulanda, was swiftly rescued from the kidnappers thanks to a police and army blockade, the location of his father, Luis Manuel Diaz, remains unknown.

Liverpool have released a statement following the terrifying news ahead of their match against Nottingham Forest, which Diaz had been expected to feature in. It read: "Liverpool Football Club can confirm it is aware of an ongoing situation involving the family of Luis Diaz in Colombia.

"It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our immediate priority."

It remains unclear whether Diaz will feature in the match at Anfield on Sunday. The 26-year-old has been an integral part of Jurgen Klopp's plans so far this season, making 11 appearances in all competitions.

The Colombian Football Federation also released a statement following the news. It read: "The Colombian Football Federation regrets the security situation that the parents of our player Luis Diaz are going through. From the FCF we express our solidarity with him and his entire family and we call for the relevant authorities to act as quickly as possible to resolve the situation."

Liverpool fans have sent messages of thought and prayer to Diaz, who joined the Reds from Porto in 2022.
