Liverpool fans drowned out the traditional singing of the national anthem ahead of their Community Shield clash against Manchester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday ahead of the new Premier League season.

The FA Cup winners went head-to-head with the reigning champions of England at the home of Leicester in a bid to claim bragging rights ahead of the upcoming campaign.

With the anthem being sung before kick-off, fans of Jurgen Klopp's side could be heard showing their opposition by booing and jeering, to cause a stir on social media.

One fan said in response: "All those moaning about why Liverpool fans boo the national anthem should find out why they do."

After Liverpool fans had chosen to boo the anthem ahead of the Wembley victory over Chelsea in May, Klopp gave his own opinion on the matter.

He said: "Of course I have thoughts. But in these situations I think it’s always best to ask the question 'why do they do it?'.

"I know our people well enough that they would not do it if there was no reason. I am not here long enough to understand the reason.

"But it is for sure something historical, and that’s a question you can answer better than I ever could."

Adding: "Our fans, and I know a few fans from other clubs see it slightly differently, the majority are wonderful people, smart and go through lows and highs, suffer together.

"They wouldn’t do it if there was no reason. That’s what I know. Maybe we should ask this question."

Liverpool went into the clash looking to give their fans a boost ahead of their Premier League opener against Fulham, with City facing West Ham in their first clash of the campaign.
