Liverpool boss Klopp in line for double FA punishment after Spurs win

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reviews the Spurs win

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is in line for a double punishment from the FA for his actions after the Reds scored a late winner against Tottenham Hotspur. After Diogo Jota capitalised on a defensive error Klopp celebrated in the face of fourth official John Brooks before having a rant about referee Paul Tierney during a post-match interview.

Tensions were high as Liverpool squandered a three-goal lead at Anfield and Klopp was furious with the decision to award Tottenham a free-kick which led to Richarlison scoring a 93rd-minute equaliser. However, there was one last twist in the tale as a huge error from Lucas Moura mistakenly played Jota through on goal with the Liverpool forward netting calmly past the goalkeeper.

Still furious from the decision against his side moments earlier Klopp ran straight up to Brooks and berated the motionless fourth official before running away and pulling his hamstring in the process. Referee Tierney gave Klopp a booking for his actions, but that is unlikely to be the end of the matter given the punishment Aleksandar Mitrovic recently faced for a similar incident.

The Liverpool boss faces a double punishment after then slamming Tierney in his comments during a post-match interview with Sky Sports. He said: “How they can give a foul on Mohamed Salah (before Tottenham’s third goal)? The next situation wouldn’t have happened if we had kept the ball there.

“Free-kick and then the ball is in (our net), that’s not cool. We have our story, our history with Mr Tierney. I really don’t know what he has against us, he has said there is no problems but that cannot be true. How he looks at me, I don’t understand it.

“In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it’s really tricky and hard to understand. My celebration was unnecessary, which is fair but what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK.”

Refereeing body the PGMOL issued a statement after the game to “strongly refute” the claims about Tierney. A statement read: “PGMOL is aware of the comments made by Jurgen Klopp after his side’s fixture with Tottenham Hotspur.

“Match officials in the Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications system and having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today’s fixture, we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout including when issuing the caution to the Liverpool manager so, therefore, we strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were improper.”

The FA are set to investigate the matter and Klopp could face a double punishment for his actions and post-match comments.
