Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been told by Reds hero Michael Owen that he can’t leave out Roberto Firmino when his side host Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday. The Brazil international was in imperious form once again in the Champions League on Wednesday night and bagged two goals as his team thumped Rangers 7-1 at Ibrox.

“I can’t imagine he’s not playing,” Owen told BT Sport after the match. “He’s had such a good season and is in such good form that I don’t think Jurgen Klopp can leave him out at the weekend.”

Firmino started Wednesday’s encounter alongside summer signing Darwin Nunez in a front two. But the Reds went behind after 17 minutes as Scott Arfield stroked the ball past Alisson. Liverpool responded well and drew level midway through the first half as Firmino headed home Kostas Tsimikas’ corner. And the 31-year-old forward gave his side the advantage 10 minutes after the break as he turned in Joe Gomez’s sumptuous delivery.

Firmino’s strikes put his side on the front foot and they ended up blowing Rangers away as Nunez added a third, before Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score a hat-trick. And Harvey Elliott put the icing on the cake late on to leave Liverpool on the brink of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages.

Aside from his goalscoring antics, Firmino impressed with his all-round performance. And Rangers icon Ally McCoist agreed with Owen’s views. “I thought the game intelligence shown by Firmino was absolutely at a different level,” the ex-striker said. “I thought he was outstanding tonight.

‘Liverpool took it to another level. They didn’t just step up one gear, they stepped up two or three gears and it was a mismatch in the second half. He’s had such a good season and is in such good form that I don’t think Jurgen Klopp can leave him out at the weekend.”

Firmino has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield in recent campaigns but has started seven of his side’s 11 matches this time around. He has already found the back of the net eight times in all competitions and bagged Premier League braces against Bournemouth and Brighton.

Despite Firmino’s auspicious form, Liverpool have struggled in the league, however, and are currently 10th in the table after winning just two of their eight matches. And their hopes of winning a second Premier League title appear to already be over this season as they are 14 points adrift of leaders Arsenal and 13 points behind Pep Guardiola’s City. But Klopp’s team will at least make ground on the Citizens if they get the better of them at Anfield.
