  • The 32-year-old returned for his first light training session since the injury
  • Bayern Munich missed Lewandowski against Paris Saint-Germain last Tuesday
  • The Champions League holders had 31 shots but lost to the French outfit 3-2
  • Hansi Flick’s men then surprisingly drew 1-1 to Union Berlin as RB Leipzig won

Bayern Munich have been handed a boost as top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski was seen doing some light running during an individual session – but he won’t be fit enough to face Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday in the team’s pivotal Champions League quarter-final second leg.

The 32-year-old picked up his injury in a World Cup qualifier for Poland against Andorra at the end of last month, straining a ligament in his right knee, and this is the first time he has trained at the team’s Sabener Strasse training ground since, as fitness coach Simon Martinello put him through his paces in the snowy conditions.

Lewandowski, who has 42 goals in 36 club games this season, is set to be out for around two more weeks, with his first option to return for Hansi Flick’s men likely to be against Bayer Leverkusen on April 20 or at Mainz four days later, according to BILD.

Bayern have certainly missed the presence of the 2020 Best FIFA Men’s Player in recent games as they had 31 shots to PSG’s six in the first leg – and managed to lose 3-2. The pivotal match at the Parc des Princes is on Tuesday, with Die Roten staring down the barrel of a quarter-final exit to the side they beat in last season’s final.

Flick’s side then squandered an advantage at the weekend to draw 1-1 with Bundesliga surprise package Union Berlin.

Their lead at the summit has now been cut to five points, with RB Leipzig hot on their heels after thrashing Werder Bremen 4-1 on Saturday.

Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting is set to lead the line again for Bayern on Tuesday as Serge Gnabry continues to quarantine following a positive Covid-19 test.

PSG started the first leg quickly, with Kylian Mbappe and Marquinhos putting Mauricio Pochettino’s putting the visitors 2-0.

Choupo-Moting got one back and Thomas Muller then guided home a close-range header from Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick to set up a pulsating last 30 minutes.

Mbappe had the last laugh though, charging towards the box before setting himself and firing between Jerome Boateng’s legs into Manuel Neuer’s bottom right-hand corner to give the Germany international no chance and put PSG in control ahead of this week’s crucial second leg.
