Arsenal have been urged to sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin by two of their former players. The Gunners have been strongly linked with a move for Calvert-Lewin and Lee Dixon and Paul Merson are both keen on the possibility.

Arsenal are likely to be in the market for new strikers in 2022, with plenty of uncertainty around their current crop of forwards.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been frozen out of the team by Mikel Arteta in recent weeks after losing the captaincy for a disciplinary breach.

Meanwhile, both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are due to see their contracts expire on July 1.

Arteta has made it clear that he wants Nketiah to sign a contract extension, while Lacazette could still commit himself to the club, but the situation is fluid.

It is in this context that Arsenal have been linked with Everton’s Calvert-Lewin, as well as Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic.

Calvert-Lewin netted 16 Premier League goals last season and would make a good signing, according to former Arsenal defender Dixon.

“Would I like to see Calvert-Lewin at Arsenal? I think yes,” Dixon told the Daily Mail.

“I think you’d struggle to get one of the top, top strikers like [Erling] Haaland.

“It would be a step up for Calvert-Lewin, no disrespect to Everton.

“I like him, I think he’s got potential to be as good as he wants to be. He is fit and athletic, he is strong and good in the air and a good finisher. I would take him.”

Calvert-Lewin has been on the sidelines with a quad injury since August, but is targeting a return to Rafa Benitez’s side soon.

He scored three goals in his three league games before injury struck and the 24-year-old is sure to interest other clubs following a bumper season in 2020/21.

The England international contributed 21 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions for the Toffees and could be a good fit for Arsenal.

“Arsenal need to go out and buy Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as soon as he is fit,” ex-Gunners midfielder Merson said on Sky Sports earlier this month.

“Put in a massive bid for him. They need a focal point up front who is good and strong.

“[He would go there] because it’s the Arsenal.

He added: “Tell me a reason why they [Everton] are a bigger club than Arsenal? Arsenal are going to finish above them.

“If Calvert-Lewin goes there, they can get into the top four.”

Arsenal are currently fourth in the Premier League table ahead of their match against leaders Manchester City on Saturday.

Arteta’s side have won their last four league games and have netted nine times in their last two matches against Leeds and Norwich, despite Aubameyang’s absence.
