Laughable transfer fees from 1996 include Rivaldo for £5m and Seedorf for £3m

With nine-figure transfer deals becoming more and more commonplace in football – it's hard to imagine a time when £15million would raise eyebrows.

Now merely a drop in the ocean, £12.8million would once be able to purchase a future Ballon d'Or winner. In fact, in 1996, the entire Premier League spent a combined £75million – Liverpool surpassed that total with Darwin Nunez alone.

But even more eye-opening deals saw Rivaldo swap Brazil for Deportivo La Coruna for £5.4million. While Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf moved from Serie A to Real Madrid for a small £3.4million, slightly more than Arsenal forked over for Marquinhos this summer.

Spanish sides were the big spenders of the window, and they spent a collective £128million.

Ronaldo's £12.8million move from PSV to Barcelona was the biggest deal of the season – and he went on to bag 34 goals in 37 appearances, quite the return. While Predrag Mijatovic's £6.4million fee from Valencia to Real Madrid was the second-highest fee.

Italian clubs also outspent English clubs, with Serie A raking up a combined £85million in fees.
