- President Joan Laporta hinted that major changes are coming in weeks ahead
- He said: ‘From next week, you will see several decisions which must be taken’
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has warned that major changes will be made at the club with decisions taken as early as next week.
It has been a hugely underwhelming campaign for the Catalan side despite their Copa del Rey triumph under Ronald Koeman.
A capitulation in the final few LaLiga games has seen them slide out of title contention and they were dumped out of the Champions League by PSG.
Joan Laporta, Barcelona club president, hinted at major changed to be made at the club
The futures of both Ronald Koeman and Lionel Messi remain up in the air at the Nou Camp
Laporta branded performances in those competitions ‘incomprehensible’ and is ready to start the rebuilding process.
‘A cycle has come to an end and we are working on a renewal process,’ Laporta said at a Diario Sport event.
‘From next week, you will see several decisions which must be taken. We have to work hard to build a competitive team to win league titles and Champions Leagues.
‘When I speak of a cycle coming to an end or about renovation work, it’s because it’s what I believe must be done.
‘We won the Copa del Rey, which we are proud of, but we were knocked out of the Champions League early and have lost La Liga incomprehensibly from my point of view.’
Koeman and a number of high profile players have had their futures called into question, especially after just one win in their last five games.
Catalan newspaper ARA are reporting that discussions have taken place with club legend Xavi over the possibility of him taking the helm, despite the club legend agreeing a new two year deal with Al-Sadd.
The report indicates the Spaniard will meet with the new president and sporting director Mateu Alemany to discuss the level of responsibility he will have at the club and transfer plans for next season should he join before a contract is agreed.
Xavi recently signed a new deal as Al Sadd boss but is being considered for Barcelona boss
It is also indicated that the future of superstar Lionel Messi could be a determinant of whether Xavi decides to move on from Al-Sadd, with the Argentine’s contract expiring in June with no new deal currently in place.
Laporta and the club face a seismic summer with enormous debt that must be confronted while building for the future.
Barcelona play Eibar this weekend in their final game and are guaranteed a top four finish but a win would secure third place ahead of Sevilla.
