LaLiga 'rejects the registration of Marcos Alonso's new contract'

Barcelona’s financial woes hit another new low as LaLiga ‘won’t allow them to register Marcos Alonso’s new contract’ just days after they also failed to get approval for Gavi and Ronald Araujo’s new deals

  • Marcos Alonso, 32, signed a new contract at Barcelona on Friday afternoon
  • LaLiga are holding off on registering him due to the Financial Fair Play regulation
  • They have also rejected Barca’s attempt to register Gavi as a first XI member

LaLiga have rejected the registration of Marcos Alonso’s new contract at Barcelona as it will take the Catalans over their salary cap – according to reports.

Alonso signed a new contract at Barcelona on Friday afternoon, committing himself to the LaLiga giants until the end of the 2023-2024 campaign.

However, reports are stating that LaLiga are holding off on registering the 32-year-old’s new deal due to the Financial Fair Play regulation – according to SER ‘Què t’hi jugues, via Sport.

Alonso signed for Barcelona last summer and agreed to one-year contract on reduced wages due to the club’s financial difficulties at the time.

However, Barcelona promised to offer Alonso a bumper new contract that would keep him at the club for an additional year on higher wages.

The Catalan giants held up their end of the bargain and offered the Spaniard a new deal – which was signed on Friday afternoon.

The veteran defender agreed to a new one-year contract with the option of extending his deal by an additional year.

Barcelona manager Xavi confirmed the news at a press conference on Friday and said he was ‘very happy’ to extend the 32-year-old’s contract as he is a ‘great player’

Xavi confirmed the news at a press conference on Friday and said he was ‘very happy’ to extend the 32-year-old’s contract as he is a ‘great player’.

Speaking at the press conference, Xavi said: ‘This was a subject discussed with Jordi Cruyff and Mateu Alemany and the club. We were clear about it and it has been done.

‘I am very happy for this renewal. He is a great player and he is going to be very important for us in the next games and in the future. He is a very reliable footballer.

‘He has been a very high-level signing for us. He is a fantastic footballer who can adapt with reliability in various positions and helps us a lot. Also, in the dressing room he is a great person. He has been a great signing and that he can continue with us is great news.’

However, LaLiga have rejected the registration of Alonso as his new deal will take them over the club’s salary limit – according to SER ‘Què t’hi jugues, via Sport.

Barcelona’s issues with the Financial Fair Play regulation have also seen LaLiga reject Barcelona’s attempt to register Gavi as a member of Xavi’s first-team squad

The exact reasoning behind LaLiga’s rejection is yet to be determined but the Catalans’ issues with the Financial Fair Play regulation have prevented them for signing any new players during the transfer window.

Their issues with the Financial Fair Play regulation have also seen LaLiga reject Barcelona’s attempt to register Gavi as a member of Xavi’s first-team squad.

Barcelona filed the documentation for the 18-year-old, who is currently listed as an academy player, after he signed a new contract in September.

Barcelona thought it would be an easy process following the departures of Memphis Depay and Gerard Pique. However, their request was denied.
