Kobbie Mainoo set for bumper Man Utd pay rise thanks to contract clause

Manchester United wonder kid Kobbie Mainoo is about to double his money at Old Trafford – without a new contract.

A clause in the teenager’s current £10,000-a-week deal, which he signed earlier this year and runs until June 2026, allows for the bumper 100 per cent pay rise once he becomes a matchday regular in Erik ten Hag’s squad.

And that weekly salary leap to £20,000 is now close to being triggered following Mainoo’s recent emergence on the United first-team scene. The Stockport-born midfielder, who has been with the club since he was nine, earned rave reviews when he made his full Premier League debut in last weekend’s 3-0 rout of Everton.

And Mainoo, 18, followed that up with a second-half substitute appearance in the midweek 3-3 draw at Galatasaray in the Champions League. United’s contract policy since ten Hag assumed the managerial reins has been to tighten up the wages on offer to the club’s younger generation.

However, England Under-19s international Mainoo is proof they are happy to reward genuine quality and progress with pay-rise incentives. But for an injury at the start of the campaign, after going on pre-season tour with the Reds, he would have already secured his ‘matchday’ windfall.

Like most teams competing in Europe this term, games are coming thick and fast, with a host of Premier League teams, including United, all battling their own respective injury crises.

And as a result, Mainoo could be handed a second consecutive Premier League start by ten Hag when they take on Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Saturday night.

Speaking at his Friday afternoon press conference, Ten Hag said: "If he's ready or not, he showed on Sunday he was ready. And then we have to manage three games in six days to get the best results of all the games."

He also added he had been impressed so far by Mainoo, and pointed to his ability to scan the pitch well as one of his reasons why. "It looks like he always has time because he is scanning, he is running free," added the boss.

"Then he is scanning to see the options and then make the right decisions. He can delay, he can speed up. He makes the right decisions."
