The struggle to sanction a big-money departure for someone such as Mohamed Salah in the aftermath of Covid has ‘broken’ Liverpool, Ian Wright believes. The Reds had received huge sums of cash after selling the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Luis Suarez, but it would be a while before Sadio Mane became the next lucrative departure.

Wright argues that Liverpool were making big money selling some of their prized assets. But they have hardly been able to do so post-Covid, with Mane’s transfer to Bayern Munich last summer the exception.

Liverpool have instead needed to spend huge fees on players such as Darwin Nunez without making much money from exits. Wright believes that has ‘broken’ the Anfield outfit and is partly why they sit 15 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal. He also feels it’s left Klopp unable to rebuild his squad.

The Gunners icon insists Nunez will eventually come good but says the Uruguayan’s arrival is evidence of the enforced change in plan on Merseyside. “I think it all goes back to the pandemic and not being able to move one of the main guys on for massive money like Coutinho,” Wright said on the Kelly and Wrighty show.

“That’s Liverpool’s business. One of those would have gone for massive money, and that would have financed the next bit. But it didn’t happen.

“They have had to go a different way and now it’s broken them a little bit, because they’re going all in on Nunez. I think he will come good but what’s got to happen is the team has to come good to help him.”

Liverpool have endured a disastrous start to the season. Jurgen Klopp’s side are ninth in the Premier League and their defeat by Leeds on Saturday was their fourth of the domestic campaign already.

They have form for mounting remarkable comebacks – a 10-match unbeaten run at the end of the 2020-21 season helped them pull away from the mid-table places and finish in the top four. But Klopp still has plenty of work to do to overturn their bad start.

The Liverpool boss has urged fans to judge the team next May: “The judgement for this should come later on in the season or maybe at the end. If you say that’s it for this group of players, or for this manager, I don’t think that’s 100 per cent fair in this moment, or to judge the team or the squad, because we never had them available.

“With the amount of games we have we would usually make changes, but we cannot do that. Even if it’s unfair, it’s fine. It’s normal, it’s our life, and it’s absolutely fair to ask these questions. But we have to answer that later on. We are all out there to be judged, manager, players.”
