Kasper Schmeichel showed his class on Saturday as Leicester won the FA Cup final at Chelsea’s expense. Youri Tielemans scored the only goal of the game to gift Brendan Rodgers’ side the prize. And with Manchester United on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, Schmeichel would certainly be worth a punt.

Though Leicester have enjoyed a terrific season under Brendan Rodgers, they went into the match against Chelsea as underdogs.

After all, with Thomas Tuchel’s side in such fine form, the Blues were very much favourites.

However, Leicester didn’t read the script and picked up a deserved win at Wembley courtesy of Tielemans’ scorching strike.

While the Belgium international was the match winner, though, Schmeichel also made the headlines for a terrific display on the day.

He made a sensational save to keep Ben Chilwell at bay, diving low to parry the England international’s header onto the post.

And the Denmark international produced an even better stop to deny Mason Mount at a time where Chelsea were pressing hard for an equaliser.

Schmeichel was also a hero after the game, inviting owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha down to the pitch from the stands to bask in the moment.

And with Manchester United on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, they could certainly do a lot worse.

Schmeichel has been one of the most consistent shot-stoppers in the Premier League in recent years, ever since helping Leicester win the title back in 2016.

He showed on Saturday he’s got what it takes to perform on the biggest stage, too, with both of his saves ones for the highlights reel.

United want a new goalkeeper to challenge Dean Henderson, especially with David De Gea looking increasingly likely to leave the club behind.

As things stand, Tom Heaton seems the likeliest to arrive.

But Schmeichel would be a substantial upgrade and would press Henderson hard for a starting berth, perhaps even starting over the England star.

What’s more, is it was claimed last year that the Leicester goalkeeper ‘dreams’ of playing for United – despite previously coming through the ranks at Manchester City.

Mikkel Bischoff, who came through the ranks at City alongside Schmeichel, insists the Dane would jump at the chance to move to Old Trafford.

He told Ekstra Bladet: “United will certainly not be deterred by his [Schmeichel’s] age of 33 years.

“The most successful goalkeepers at the club in recent years have been well into their thirties. He can easily play three or four good years there.

“Schmeichel is a huge United fan. He always has been and always will be, it will be the biggest dream come true if he were to succeed [in joining United].

“If Kasper gets the opportunity to play just ten games for United, then he jumps.

“It’s simply so big for him. He is such a big fan that he will do anything to get to that club.”

United, as things stand, aren’t in for Schmeichel.

However, after his outstanding performance at Wembley, they should reconsider that stance.

Schmeichel was thrilled after the match, saying: “I’m so happy I can’t begin to describe it.

“To think of the people who have lifted this trophy, and to be able to do it today is beyond my wildest dreams.

“It’s what dreams are made of, I’ve dreamed about this since I was a child.

“It was horrible [the last few minutes] – I was begging for the final whistle. But now it is all worth it.”
