‘I scored four goals in a Prem game – I only bought my boots the night before’

Ex-Manchester United goalscorer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed he bought the boots he wore when he scored four times against Nottingham Forest the night before the game.

The former Red Devils striker and manager was the man of the moment as he appeared in front of fans for ‘An Evening with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’, where he shared stories from his time at Old Trafford.

In United’s 1998/99 treble winning season, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side ran riot away against Nottingham Forest in a February afternoon that has gone down in legend.

The baby faced assassin revealed his famous performance that game was made possible following a late night shopping trip.

The 50-year-old was asked about his four-star performance at the City Ground in 1999 where he shared a story that he had realised the day before that he had run out of boots.

Instead of bothering his employers, the Norwegian went shopping at the Trafford Centre to buy his own pair for the Forest game, which saw United run out 8-1 winners – with Solskjaer scoring all four of his goals in the last 10 minutes.

Solskjaer would go on to score 12 goals that season in the Premier League from just 19 games.

But his most memorable moment from that season was the stoppage time winner in the Champions League final to secure United the treble.

When reminiscing about that instinctive moment, Solskjaer revealed: “I’ve never watched the full game.

“I’ve watched the 15 minutes after I came on, once. But I’ve seen that goal a million and one times.”

Solskjaer left United in 2007 when he retired following a knee injury that had plagued his final seasons, ending an 11-year spell at Old Trafford.

However, he would return in 2018 as manager, originally on a caretaker basis after Jose Mourinho was sacked.

Solskjaer ultimately left United in 2021 after his interim spell became permanent but without success. However, he still remains a regular at Old Trafford and was spotted in the crowd against Wolves on Saturday.
