Argentine manager Pochettino has agreed to take over the Blues and is set to become Chelsea’s sixth permanent boss in five years.

The 51-year-old has already managed Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham, who he guided to the Champions League final, but has been out of work since his exit from PSG last summer.

Pochettino will take charge of the club in the summer, allowing caretaker boss Frank Lampard to oversee Chelsea’s final three games of the season.

Ex-Spurs boss Pochettino is one of the most highly-rated managers in Europe but has a huge job on his hands at Stamford Bridge.

Despite spending almost £600m on new signings over the past 12 months, Chelsea have endured a miserable season, slipping to 11th in the Premier League.

But Chelsea’s squad are at least optimistic that Pochettino is the right man to take the team forward and believe the Argentine is not only a shrewd appointment but a safe choice, according to CBS Sports.

Pochettino needs to trim a bloated squad at Stamford Bridge but is also keen to bring in a couple of his own signings this summer and will target players with Premier League pedigree.

Ex-PSG boss Pochettino will become Todd Boehly’s third permanent manager since he bought the club last year.

Reacting to Pochettino’s expected arrival in west London, former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy told Sky Sports: ‘It’s about time!

‘This has been in the pipeline for some time. In the last three weeks, I’ve heard the deal has been done. They’ve obviously been going through all the little bits and pieces that these contracts take. I’m delighted with the news.’

Chelsea drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest on Saturday and return to action next weekend against Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Following the Forest stalemate, Lampard said: ‘The second half was ours, control of the game was ours obviously in terms of possession but in the first half we weren’t dynamic enough in the top end of the pitch.

‘From our point of view we lose half the game by starting slow. We start the second half, overlap and score and make sprints, movements and we score. whether it’s a fair result I don’t know but we have to do more to win the game.’
