Guardiola wanted Man City to replicate ‘geese in flight’ after being fascinated

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola became fascinated by the formation of geese last season as he watched drone footage of a training session.

The Spaniard was enthused by the teamwork of the birds and noticed similarities between the geese and how a football team should behave together.

The footage appears in a new documentary released by the club that shows events at the Etihad and the training ground during the final days of the season.

City claimed their fifth Premier League title and reached their first Champions League final but fell short of lifting the trophy after losing to Chelsea in Portugal.

In the documentary, Guardiola can be seen becoming fascinated by a group of geese in flight whilst reviewing drone footage of one of his training sessions one afternoon last season.

He began to enthuse about their teamwork to City performance analyst Harry Dunn as he noticed a similarity with how a squad should behave together.

Guardiola felt that the geese's formation of having the leaders at the front with those that follow supporting from behind reflected how a team should operate.

The documentary also shows the club lifting their fifth Premier League title and their crushing defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final in Porto.

City finished 12 points clear of rivals Manchester United to claim their fifth Premier League title and their third with Guardiola as manager.

A record breaking run of 21 straight wins between December and March set them on the way to the title as they also lifted the Carabao Cup and made their first Champions League showpiece.

Having lost 1-0 to Chelsea in that May final, Guardiola has since bolstered his squad with the signing of Aston Villa and England playmaker Jack Grealish for £100million.

They have also been continuously linked with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane and they will face his current club on the opening weekend of the new league season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

City did, however, suffer defeat in the traditional season curtain raiser as they lost 1-0 to Leicester City at Wembley on Saturday in the Community Shield, with Grealish making his debut from the bench.
