Goal shy Man Utd flop Weghorst says Ten Hag wants him doing ‘defensive work’

Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst has revealed that Erik ten Hag has asked him to drop deeper while playing for the Red Devils.

Weghost has divided the United fanbase, with the Dutchman linking up the play but struggling to get on the scoresheet. And Weghorst has now revealed he's being asked to drop into the midfielder rather than be a goal threat by Ten Hag.

The Dutchman said: "The manager told me at half-time in the away game at Fulham that he was considering the option of playing me as a 10, behind Rashford.

"He told me just to take his plan into account because Ten Hag is a manager who places a lot of value on task-conscious play. The manager then told me I had to do my share of defensive work in the role. I am a team player, so I replied 'That's no problem at all, boss'."

Weghorst also spoke about his failure in front of goal at Old Trafford: "Sometimes I think I am doing really well – but then I remember I am still only on two goals. That's also how everyone looks at football.

"I try to teach my children to look at other aspects than just goals – and that works for me as well. I prefer to look at what is positive. When I scored my first goal at Nottingham Forest I said in an interview I can't wait for my first goal in a home game in front of our fans."

United fans have been critical of the loanee – with some fans over the weekend joking they'd rather have Scott McTominay up top for the Red Devils.

Richard Keys has been Weghorst's most vocal critic in recent months. Keys fumed on his blog: "It’s not Weghorst’s fault, but he has to be the worst player I’ve ever seen in a United jersey.

"He’s a bang ordinary No 9, who couldn’t get in a struggling Burnley team, but what on earth possesses Seven Hag to think he’s a sumptuous 10? He’s not a 'pressing monster'. He doesn’t 'make runs' because he can’t run. And he doesn’t score goals."
