Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has revealed his dream signing for Manchester United and told football director John Murtough the positions he should prioritise this summer. United have made clear progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, emerging as Manchester City’s closest challengers for the Premier League title.

But they are still some way back from their fierce rivals and require reinforcements if they are to consistently fight for trophies.

Murtough was promoted in March to his current position of football director and handed overall responsibility for recruitment.

United will be hoping for a more fruitful window than the one which preceded this season, when the Red Devils failed to bring in their top target Jadon Sancho.

With plans now being drawn up for the summer and targets being scouted, United legend Neville has now weighed in with his thoughts about who the Red Devils should bring in.

Taking part in a Q&A on Twitter, the former United and England right-back replied “Varane” when asked “If you could bring one player from a rival this summer to Manchester United, who would it be?”.

Real Madrid defender Varane would be an impressive signing for United, with the defender entering the final year of his contract.

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for Varane, with Madrid rumoured to be willing to cash in on the Frenchman to raise funds for an attempt at signing Kylian Mbappe.

But Varane continues to be a key member of Zinedine Zidane’s side, making 36 appearances this season, helping Real to keep 11 clean sheets in La Liga as they have battled back into contention.

The 27-year-old, who has won four Champions League titles since arriving at the Bernabeu in 2011, is currently valued at £63million by transfermarkt, but United could negotiate a cut-price deal with his contract coming to a close.

In addition to his dream signing, Neville was also asked what the top three priorities are for United this summer.

The pundit believes that his former club must target a centre back, a right winger and a striker when the window opens.

That perhaps influenced his response to the question of his dream signing, with United’s defensive vulnerabilities being exposed this year.

After missing out on Sancho last summer, Solskjaer has failed to solve his problem position at right winger, with a return for the Borussia Dortmund man potentially on the cards.

While Marcus Rashford has made the left winger role his own in Solskjaer’s line-up, none of Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood or Dan James have been able to make their make on the opposite side.

And up top, though Edinson Cavani was signed ahead of this season, he has struggled for goals recently, with his last coming in February.

That has seen him be heavily linked with a departure after just one season at Old Trafford, with no clear replacement currently on United’s books.
